This is an especial problem here in America. It seems American Christians are willing to accept that Christians "over there" might suffer persecution and bad times, but American Christians expect their lives to be filled with all things good, everyone getting along, no one bothering them, no real troubles. American Christians want to have their feet planted in the church and in the world. A little "religion" to get them by, help them feel better, while following the ways of the world when it comes to raising their children, their entertainment, their jobs, their lifestyle, their activities.

So many Christian parents won't bother to have their children in Sunday school, complain it's just too much trouble, to difficult, too early, but let the school schedule a sports banquet on Sunday and these same parents and their children will be up and ready and drive 30 miles without complaint to attend the event.

Perhaps on another note, but something that's a real problem, is how so many Christians are more drawn to a particular pastor than they are drawing closer to Christ. When the pastor is out of town for some reason and he has another pastor preach for him, it's very common for the attendance to drastically drop. Normal attendance may be 200 but when there is a guest pastor maybe only 120 will attend. Nearly half the congregation shows their lack of interest in gathering at church, showing what amounts to disrespect to the guest pastor and their own pastor who selected them for that occasion, and indicating that when they can't hear "their pastor", they are uninterested in hearing the Word preached.

I believe that most are drawn to the pastor who speech, voice, tone, personality, suits them, not what he preaches,. If his speech, voice, tone, personality is liked, the rest matters not. And of course most wants a very liberal Bible believing preacher which will pat them on the back telling them how good of a Christian they are.

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

We are in that day.

Very true, that's what I was referring to. If the people were attracted to the sound preaching, they would also be in attendance when their pastor entrusted the pulpit to another pastor who will rightly preach the Word.

Too many search for pleasantness, not conviction, not edification, not a drawing closer to the Lord.
