Are the courts taking on too much authority these days? Just over in NJ the governor cut back spending on schools to save money and the courts overturned it. Even in our country, courts are ruling on laws that have been passed or not passed. Is this the way things were meant to be? I thought congress was its own set of checks and balances? Can courts just sue to stop all the laws? It seems strange because in general, this puts laws in the hands of one judge or maybe a very small jury....????

The courts have been overstepping their authority for a very long time.

FDR changed the way the Supreme Court operates, all because he didn't like their rulings based upon the Constitution. FDR threatened to pack the SC with those who would rule his way and the SC caved in and suddenly began ruling in favor of FDR without consideration for what the Constitution says.

Since that time the lower courts have followed the same pattern and both congress and presidents have failed to put a stop to this.

Thomas Jefferson warned of this and when the CSA was formed they attempted to address this problem in their constitution. Today judges have taken upon themselves the power to rule.

Congress actually has constitutional power and oversight of most (if not all) courts except the SCOTUS (and even there, impeachments can be brought). But Congress is not doing it's job (no surprise there), and hasn't in years, of reining in the courts. So, judges began legislating from the bench. SSotomayer (spelling?) was caught on tape advocating that very thing...something which our constitution was set up to avoid. Legislation is to take place in congress, not in the courts or the white house.

A really good book to read would be Betrayed by the Bench by John Stormer. Here's a review of it:

So, yes, Kita, courts are definitely overstepping their constitutional bounds.

It's a sad state of affairs, we (the general public) can't be bothered to be informed and respond accordingly. The power is with the people but we are woefully uninformed. There is another thread here that talks about the public school system. That is a great part of how we came to be here today.

America is close to, if not already there, where things are similar to how Stalin handled the idea of elections and how things have been done in Chicago and much of Illinois State politics. The people no longer have the voting power they think they do, because as Stalin stated, it's not about how many vote for who, but rather a matter of who counts the ballots. That's the same practice which has been used in Chicago politics and through Chicago spread into Illinois State politics and even national politics. It's widely believed, for instance, that had the Democratic political machine in Chicago not added extra votes for Kennedy, Nixon would have won Illinois in 1960.

The system is very rigged today and designed so the only "choice" for president will be either a Dem or a Repub, and then only one the Party elite have allowed to get into the real running. Consider the Repub Party sabotaged Republican candidate Patrick Buchanan; or how the Dems took out Traficant because he wouldn't play their game; or how the Dem Party elite and the media worked together to push Obama into getting the nomination while at the same time working hard to ensure that Hillary didn't.

The presidential "debate" system is rigged in similar manner. After the "problems" with Perot and othes, the Dems and Repubs have set forth rules that makes it exceedingly difficult for any "third party" candidate to be involved in the debates. On top of that, they've rigged the debates so they can keep out their own members they don't want in the debates; such as when they shut out Alan Keyes, for instance.

We can change the status quo. Elect the people who will correct the deficiencies. I can not accept as long as the "few" have breath, that we can't change. The truth is that the heart has to be changed, humanity has a had time accepting personal responsibilty and accountability for each persons own actions.

Christians in America would have to wake up for this to happen. Right now American Christians are too interested in worldly matters and not interested in getting their hearts right with God. This explains why they are not interested in spreading the Gospel and making disciples throughout the land.

Certainly can't disagree. It is my prayer for God to give me a new desire for the lost each day. I know many churches have a vigorous outreach.
