Is the War Coming Home?
by Patrick J. Buchanan

Faisal Shahzad sought to massacre scores of fellow Americans in Times Square with a bomb made of M-88 firecrackers, non-explosive fertilizer, gasoline and alarm clocks.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to blow up a U.S. airliner over Detroit with a firebomb concealed in his underpants. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shot dead 13 fellow soldiers at Fort Hood and wounded 29.

Why did these men attempt the mass murder of Americans who did no harm to them? What impelled them to seek martyrdom amid a pile of American corpses?

Though all were Muslims, none seems to have been a longtime America-hater or natural-born killer. Hasan was proud to wear Army fatigues to mosque. Shahzad had become a U.S. citizen. Abdulmutallab was the privileged son of a prominent Nigerian banker.

The New York Times ties all three to the Internet sermons of Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemen-based imam born and educated in the United States who inspires Muslims worldwide to jihad against America. But, following Sept. 11, al-Awlaki had been seen as a bridge between Islam and the West.

Now President OBama has authorized his assassination.

What do the four have in common?

All were converted in manhood into haters of America willing to kill and die in a jihad against America. And the prOBability is high that there are many more like them living amongst us who wish to bring the war in the Af-Pak here to America.

But what radicalized them? And why do they hate us?

Taking a cue from George W. Bush, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said of the Times Square bomber, "We will not be intimidated by those who hate the freedoms that make ... this country so great."

This was the mantra after Sept. 11. We are hated not because of what we do in the Middle East, but because of who we are: people who love freedom and stand for women's rights.

And that is why they hate us – and why they come to kill us.

In a way this is a comforting thought, because it absolves us of the need to think. For no patriotic American is going to demand we surrender our freedom to prevent fanatics from attacking us.

The Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens advances a parallel view. We are hated, he says, because of our popular culture.

We are loathed in the Islamic world, Stephens writes, because of "Lady Gaga – or, if you prefer, Madonna, Farrah Fawcett, Marilyn Monroe, Josephine Baker or any other American woman who has ... personified what the Egyptian Islamist writer Sayyid Qutb once called 'the American Temptress.'"

This hatred is at least 60 years old, says Stephens, for Qutb wrote even before "Elvis, Playboy, the pill, women's lib, acid tabs, gay rights, Studio 54, Jersey shore and ... Lady Gaga."

Qutb's revulsion at American degeneracy is why his legion of Islamic followers hate us.

Again, a comforting thought. For, if Lady Gaga is the prOBlem, there is nothing we Americans can do about it.

Yet, this is as self-delusional as saying the FLN set off bombs in movie theaters and cafes in Algiers to kill the French because of what Brigitte Bardot was doing on screen in "And God Created Woman."

America's toxic culture may be a reason devout Muslims detest us. It is not why they come here to kill us. Mohammed Atta's friends did not target Hollywood, but centers and symbols of U.S. military and political power.

U.S. Marines were not attacked by Hezbollah until we inserted those Marines into Lebanon's civil war. No Iraqi committed an act of terror against us before we invaded Iraq. And if the Sept. 11 killers were motivated by hatred of the immorality of our society, what were they doing getting lap dances in Delray Beach?

Osama bin Laden declared war on us, first and foremost, to end the massive U.S. presence on sacred Saudi soil that is home to Mecca and Medina.

Some may insist this was not his real motive. But, apparently, the Saudis believed him, for they quickly kicked us out of Prince Sultan Air Base.

As for the Taliban, they would surely make short work of Lady Gaga. But their stated grievance is the same as Gen. Washington's in our war with the British: If you want this war to end, get out of our country.

By Occam's razor, the simplest explanation is usually the right one. Looking at America's wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Maj. Hasan, Abdulmutallab and Shahzad decided that what we call the war on terror was in reality a war on Islam.

All decided to use their access to exact retribution for our killing of their fellow Muslims.

We are being attacked over here because we are over there.

Nor is it a good sign that U.S. intelligence is reporting that rising numbers of U.S. Muslims are making Internet inquiries about how and where to get training to bring the war home to America.

I disagree with Mr. Buchanan--we are being attacked because of Muslim theology. In the Old Testament Israel was told to utterly destroy the "pagan" gods of the Canaanites. It was horrific--the total annihilation of people, men, women children, everyone had to die because they worshiped false gods. The war on terrorism is a religious war; they are fighting against the God of gods, and cannot prevail. Sure, the Lord may be using them to chastise America for her infidelity against Him, but nonetheless, the Muslims are out to kill Christians (this means Americans to them). Many have vowed to wage jihad against the heathens , and our only hope (in their estimation) is to convert to radical Muslimism. Notice the gore, and the destruction they reek upon "innocent" people and you will see the same type of thing in the O.T. Cutting off the heads of their enemies is not something new!

I believe that we need to pray diligently for the Lord to show Himself strong. They are exalting a false god above the God of gods, and are in store for a mighty destruction. Today, we can hardly proclaim the name of Jesus, and Gos has been kicked out of schools and society in general, but the god of the Muslims is gaining attention, and has even pervaded the school system (government) now. We are in dire need of our God and His might; pray, pray, pray, and who knows if our God might draw the line and say "It is enough". He can put an end to their blasphemes, and destroy their mosques, and cast down their strongholds, but we need to beg Him to get involved.

i am reminded of Rabshekeh in 2 Kings 18 (take time to read about it) and how he defied the God of Israel. How long will the Lord allow them to desecrate His name and make Him as a weak god that is no god? Pray, and diligently seek His face, and He has promised to heal our land. (2 Chron. 7:14)

In the larger sense I agree. Islam is the enemy of all non-Muslims. In the immediate context Buchanan is correct. The reason America is such a large target for Muslims at this time is because of American involvement/interference in Muslim countries, in what Muslims consider "Muslim land" or even, "Muslim holy soil".

Overall, you are correct that the foundation, the basis of this is the war between God and Satan. The ungodly forces of the false god of Islam are bent upon the destruction of anything Christian. Regardless of Americas turning from God and even the last two presidents publically proclaiming America is not a Christian nation, to the rest of the world, and especially the Muslim world, America is still viewed as a Christian nation.

Indeed the battle is the Lord's and prayer is of utmost importance. What if one more Great Awakening were possible in America if God's people were to dilegently pray and turn themselves wholly to Him?

I disagree with PB on several fronts, not the least this one. As to the muslims hating us and attacking us because of our "interference" over there - I don't buy it one little bit (especially when one realizes that, to those muslims who would wipe us out, the WORLD is theirs). The muslims have been quietly going about infiltrating over here for years. Their stated goal is world domination - and what country has been the biggest block to that? America.

The debauchery which we as Christians do not like is one thing that muslims hate. Yes, even those who have come over here and participated. They view this as proof that the western world is corrupt and needs to be brought under Sharia law. Yes, they are inconsistent because they partake and condemn at the same time.

Everything about us is repugnant to them. And by them, I am referring to those who follow jihadists. The men in PB's article may not have "converted" to being America-haters until adulthood, but there was something there or it wouldn't have happened. They listened to this imam AND ACCEPTED WHAT HE SAID. American born or naturalized, they chose to attack their country. And blaming it on anything but the fact that they were following orders to kill because THEY WANTED TO is wrong.

Sure Muslims hate America but they always lash out foremost against those they see as the greatest threat at the time. American troops in Muslim lands is seen as a very great threat. There are many other nations the Muslims hate, and of course their ultimate goal is a world conquored for Islam. However, they set their focus upon the most immediate threats to Islam as they see it.

Similar to the Chinese, Muslims tend to be patient overall. They are content to take over Europe, which they hate in similar manner to America, by virtue of immigration and high birth rates. A Turkish Muslim who was elected to the German government even boasted that modern Muslim women were doing what the mighty Muslim warriors of old were unable to do, conquer Germany!

No doubt, Muslims hate America but the intensity of their hatred wouldn't be directed at America at this as it is if America were not so busy inteferring (yes, America is interferring in many Muslim countries as well as other countries) in Muslim countries. They would still strike out at America if the opportunity was there but their concentration would turn to whatever then seemed to be their most immediate threat to Islam.

Muslims don't hate us for our freedom, they hate us because to them we represent Christianity and we represent degeneracy that we seek to push upon them via TV, radio, movies, etc.

If America leaders would simply face this fact, that this is truly a holy war to them based upon their religion then they could make some wise decisions. They could either come up with an exit strategy that would remove much of the perception of America as a threat to the Muslim homelands or they could develope a new war strategy based upon the facts rather than PC beliefs and liberal ideology.
