Losing the Battle with Culture I was listening to a conference discussion and one of the speakers made an acute OBservation. He was asked why there was so little concern for holiness in the church and in our culture. He pointed out that the one led to the other. The jOB of the church is to have a sanctifying effect on the community. We are supposed to rub off on those around us. Unfortunately, said the speaker, it is working the other way around. He gave one example: our OBservance of the Sabbath (one of God's big Ten). 30 years ago businesses were closed on the Sabbath. It was understood that this was the day God's people went to church to sit under the teaching of…

When I'm riding in the car and the Captain's Club comes on I don't change channels...I listen to as much as I can. My children are grown and have left the nest so, there is no excuse there, I just enjoy it. How about the riddle in the middle?

Hello, I am a listener to this two preacher. Their ministry are Back To the Bible and Insights for Living. I really like their sermons, very encouraging and as a Christian I learned a lot from their preaching. In my own opinion, the doctrines that they preach and teach are based on the bible. But there is one thing I don't like much in their preaching, ministry or websites... every end or in between to their audio sermon that I am able to access over the internet, they always ask donations from their listener and sometimes I find it awkward especially if I turned the audio so loud in order that my unbeliever friends can hear the preaching. Aside from asking donations th…

http://samgipp.com/essays/?page=78.htm I have endeavored not to be an alarmist. I didn't jump onboard with the Y2K panic. I don't spend my time trying to uncover all the conspiracies involved in the false pricing of Twinkies. Here is the view I take. I have always believed in the adage: "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best." (Yes, I know, you're very "spiritual" and say "pray" for the best. If you want to write to scold me for saying "hope," save my time, your crayons, and don't.) Add to that, the fact that I believe this president is: an America-hating Muslim, an ideological Communist and not a citizen, who is bent on the disassembling of our nation. I further be…

I found out today that in a small city I once lived in the once vibrant and solid Baptist church there has made major changes. It seems they now have a female Associate Pastor and have yoked themselves to the American Baptists. Is this sort of thing also a prOBlem in your area?

An Open Letter to Glenn Beck Mr. Beck I have reviewed the transcripts of your June 25th show on “Black Founding Fathers” and I have a few thoughts and comments for you. Let’s start with the title of the show itself - “Black Founders.” FYI, the men who conceived, founded and in the first 50 years at least, built this country, were white men of Anglo-Celtic descent. They gave to their posterity, as well as to all of us who are not descended from their bloodlines, their language, their culture, their political philosophy and laws, and their belief in liberty. As an American of Italian descent, I am thankful for that, though secretly at least, I do wish that s…

By Grace, through Faith (An analogy) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: “ (Eph 2:8) Have you ever been in a large industrial factory and seen the pipes that run along the ceiling? These pipes are called “raceways” and the contain the electrical wiring that runs nearly every operation in the building. They are more frequently called “conduit” when used in a smaller field of construction; the metal pipe insulates and protects the wires inside. Conduit is the means of moving the power to the right location. Faith is like conduit; God’s grace is the power, and the conduit distributes that power to the right…

(I don't know if this subject is in the right thread, so warn me if it is.) I always had this question: Is it ok to kill a mosquito? my answer for that was: Yes, and no because when you kill a mosquito it is always with a reason, and you're the one who decides which side you will choose. The good one, or the bad one. The good side: Killing the mosquito because he is biting you, or when you kill it because you know he will bite you anyway. The bad side: Killing the mosquito by torturing it (feet by feet method). Killing it without reason, Hunting mosquito's to just see them die. What do you guys think?

When God told Israel to invade Canaan, the people said that He was full of hate; When Paul rebuked Peter for hypocrisy, the people said he had no love; When Elijah called down fire from Heaven to destroy the envoy that the king sent to him, they said he was an angry man; When Elymus was struck with blindness, they said the apostles had no right to do it. When Achan and his family were stoned for coveting the spoil, they said it wasn’t fair; When the widow woman’s son was restored to life by Elijah, they said “Why him? What about me?” “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my s…

of love almost destroyed redemption for all men. I believe that there were several attempts in Scripture to destroy the the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary. One such that the Lord showed me, is in the Gospel of John, chapter 20, verse 17: "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." I have posted this before on OB in devotion form, but it is so ironic that I thought to share it again here. Christ had risen from the dead, and had to present the atoning blood to the Father at the Mercy seat. If human hands would have touched hi…

My wife and I were talking the other day about a number of old fashion ways that we have that people are "shocked" at. Some examples are: 1. Children calling adults by their last name. I was at a camp last week and I introduced my 12 year old son to the camp director (who I went to school with) as Bro. Last name. He then replied, just have him call be Bro. "first name". When I told him that my children are not permitted to call an adult by their first name, he was simply shocked. I took a group of teens canoeing during the week and the teens were calling their youth pastor by his first name, without the title "Bro" or "pastor". When I brought the topic up to the teens, …

I know this seems weird to me and my generation; but is there any Scriptural prohibition against using technology this way? I'm not asking about this particular Pastor or Church's doctrine to be discussed as part of this thread, just what the Biblical implications are. http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/innovation/07/14/virtual.preaching/index.html?hpt=Sbin

Here's an ethical question. In my secular jOB, I'm the county veterans officer. In that capacity, I help veterans apply for federal VA benefits and can provide emergency funds for unexpectant bills. The emergency funds come from local taxes and is to be used to help a veteran overcome an emergency not of his/her own making. For example, a veteran gets laid off his jOB, and needs help paying his utilities, this office would assist in that. But here's a different angle to the question: If a veteran receives a $400 fine for speeding, does that constitute an emergency that would allow county tax money to pay for that fine? Or, can county funds be used to pay his/her utility…

His Creation Order By Angela Wittman Wives 'to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, OBedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.' The recent endorsement of South Carolina GOP Gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley by Sarah Palin and her good showing in the primary has many attributing her popularity to Mrs. Palin's endorsement and continued involvement in her campaign. But at what cost to the family of Nikki Haley and those women who try to follow in her political footsteps? Politico reporter Kasie Hunt wrote this about Sarah Palin and her influence in conservative GOP races in the article Sister Sledgehammer: Sarah Palin takes aim …

Christian Service Christians nowadays put a lot of emphasis on our own works. What I mean is that we feel that the busier we are running to and fro, and doing the things we do “for the Lord” is our service or worship to Him. My friends, worship is a personal thing; it is an intimate relationship between us and our Savior. Our service may show that we believe; it may exalt us to certain heights, and gain us favor and position, but many times, it is simply a dead end when it comes to worshipping our Lord. Perhaps this is why we sometimes “burn out” for the Lord, we are too busy working to worship! “Worship” is defined as: “1. To adore; to pay divine honors to; t…

Let me begin by saying that I am in no way trying to judge my brothers and sisters who do not hold my convictions, but I do believe that it would be wise for you to listen to what I have to say. Call it food-for-thought. About my second year of high school the Lord started to prick my heart about the movies that I watched. They were not always sinfull (so I thought!), but they definitely were a far cry from God honoring. At first I resisted the idea of sacrificing the watching of these movies, but as I grew in the Lord it became more and more appearant that movies were hindering my growth and causing me to repeatedly fall back into sin. I finally surrendered to the Lord…

" …shadowing the mercyseat; " In Ex.25.22 notice the mercy seat (2 words) in the Old Testament, has become (1 word) in the New Testament. Is singular word "mercyseat" circumstantial by the writers’ language translation; or is there significance to Christ becoming both propitiation and mediator between God and men? Notice also, in Ex.25.22 that God was above the mercy seat. No amount of animal blood could purify what man’s hands had crafted for God to sit. The only thing which could purify the mercyseat acceptable to God was the blood of God. Full atonement for man’s sins remained in shadow until Christ shed His blood on the cross at Calvary. I believe thi…

We hear few messages about the authority of the local church today, or so it seems. What about those "para-church " groups that spring up all over the place? One in particular, (just for an example--not to condemn or condone) is the "Creation Science" movement, which has already gotten much bad publicity with Ken Hovind and a few others. Isn't the work of God supposed to be ordained by, and a ministry of, the local church? Yet we often give to other organizations, though they are doing a good thing, they are not under the auspices of the local church. We know that "The Chuch" is not confined to one body of believers, but it is important to recognize the local chur…

I have noticed a few "regulars" on OB have not been posting lately--Hope everything is ok. If you are checking the forums, but not posting for some reason, please check in once in awhile so that we will know you are all right. I miss Holster, Crushmaster, Jerry (no numbers, although he is a blessing too!) and a few others that have been such a blessing to me. If anyone knows how they are doing, please let us know.

I Shall Not Want “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psa. 23:1) The older I get, the less I desire of this old world. As the world around me changes so drastically, I can hardly fathom the depth of grace that it takes to see me through. Mayhem surrounds us as a cloud, and trouble charges at us from every side; Satan runs freely in the streets, and the world seem to be OBlivious to his wiles. This world has no more for me. I used to say, along with the multitudes, that I am a pilgrim here--a sojourner, merely passing through, but I grabbed and fought, and gnashed at others, competing for the worlds delights; Oh, how foolish I have been! What does it a…
