Two priests to host movie review show on CatholicTV

When a fellow priest overheard one of their debates about a movie, he suggested the two men get their own television show.

The new show features footage from films such as Superman and Lord of the Rings. It also aims to help Catholics think about their faith.

The two priests examine themes such as the

Comparing Superman a fictional character to Jesus. Quite amazing at what some people can come up with. :smilie_loco:4

:saywhat:

Although I havn't read/seen the review, I doubt is comparing the death of Superman to the sacraficial death of Christ. The movie is not stating that Superman is a god just like Jesus, or that Jesus was just a super human like Superman. Rather, it is an allegory. Most of our (English speaking people) hero literature is based on the sacraficial death of Christ. It is evidence that we see (or used to see) any giving up of one's life for another, as a reflection of the love of God. Another great example is the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, which is intentionally written as a Christian allegory.

Based on fiction.

I read an article a few years back written by a RCC priest, he compared Superman to Christ, very poor comparison, why? Superman is pure fiction, nothing more. You can't compare something that is fiction to something that is real, especially when it comes to God and his Son, unless its a false teacher for they have no bounds of truth to stay within.

Of course I realize, just using the Bible, is foolishness to many.

This is like they have gone full circle. The passion plays were established because people couldn't follow the "sermons". So, dramas entered the RCC.

Now, I guess they figure people can't apply the messages, so they will deduce underlying messages from movies... I can see the accompanying book "Saturday Night Specials -- Turn your Netflix into Homilies!!":wink

Unfortunately, I know a few churches in my area who would probably copy the idea. (Churches with preachers who should know better).

Are we missing the point here? It's not whether Superman can be a "picture" an "allegory" or such. I would expect that from the world. The issue here is that more and more of this is being done. There is a web site where another Christian reviews and finds "redeeming" values in movies. He reviewed the new remake of "War of the Worlds" and he claimed it wasn't as good because it didn't have the religious references of the original movie.

The issue here is that we have people looking to Hollywood movies to find "socially redeeming" religious messages which is just absolutely ridiculous! To get a message from God I'm turning to my Bible. I'm not going to run to any stupid movie!

Greg, Your signature verse would be good to apply to this subject.

This is nothing new for the Roman Church. They have adopted idols and gods from pagan forms of religion for thousands of years. This in an effort to entice pagans to adopt Rome's own form of heritical papal worship.

So, why not adopt the Hollywood gods and pagan practices to rope in any who might want to stray from the "faith?"

This is nothing new for Christianity. I believe it's in Acts 17 where St. Paul uses the alter of the unnknown God to tell his audience about the Christian God. He was in no way suggesting people adopt the "unnknown god" in place of Christ, just as no one is suggesting that we adopt Superman as god.
