Others not being able you see where you have been is great. Its actually no ones business unless your on someone else's computer and or at work.

Lots of people share computers, and there are many who do not want other to see where they have been on the net not because they visited porn sites, perhaps they visited a site to buy a present for their husband, wife, or child, or been to their banking web page. We all have a right to privacy.

Especially those who have no computer and go to public libraries.

Everyone in America is slowly losing all of their privacy. I suppose one day they will be able to hook us up to a machine and they can tell every private thought a person has ever had and or everything we have ever done, no doubt Hitler would have loved such a machine.

You know, even good people has evil thoughts. On a computer some times you wind up on a site not because that is were you wanted to go.

I had this K-9 blue coat protection.

it is free.

and block porns and other sites from children.

the good thing about it is that you can set it to watch where they visit.

I switch to Live family safety (which is free) so I didn't have to type down my password every time I wanted to go facebook or this board on my desktop... but I am thinking about going back to k9 bluecoat again. http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

I don't like the type of program that restricts access because some of them make it very difficult to access perfectly harmless pages.

I do like the accountability programs...there is one called "covenant eyes" where they send you a list through email each week of every site you've accessed and there is no way to disable it unless your spouse or parent puts in the password. We don't have it right now but we have thought about getting it.

Right now, all our computers are free reign/free access and there are no secrets. Anyone can dig around on anyone's computer at any time, whether at home or office. And both of us know enough about computers to find anything we need to find at any time.

Anyway I'm the computer junkie around here rather than my husband LOL. And he knows where I "hang out" online...usually on message boards like this one or the one for my surgery coming up in a few months...or pente.org....or cake stuff...or chatting. :lol

(Wanted to add that my husband knows alot about computers, he just doesn't sit around on them like me. ha.)

You are correct, "Porn Mode" is being called by others. To me this is the same thing as erasing your cookies and history files. The option is there to erase or hide them, what is the difference?

The purpose behind this is to stop people from installing things on your computer to see where you have been so that they can send you target ads. At the same time it will also stop others seeing where you have been.

The loser here is marketing companies.

I did read that as well....seems like the avg consumer is more excited about the "porn mode" part than the "non marketing" part. At least that's how Fox News portrayed it...but then, Fox News is all about immorality anyways....

In our family there's no reason anyone needs to be private on the computer.

Yes, but you one of the many families that has computers that needs some privacy for what ever reason.

Just be thankful you have such a family, all people are not that fortunate, and those who are not need this feature.

I'm one of the fortunate ones too and I'm thankful for that.

But there are many reason for that feature than porn, and some of them have been pointed out.

Its always been available on Windows XP, its just now easier. And its good for your computer to get rid of all of that junk from time to time, if you don't it will take up much space and if one has a small hard drive with lots of stuff on it and a low amount of memory, getting rid of it will speed up their computer.

Seems like you focusing on just one small part of it, porn, and not realizing all the other aspect of it.

Jerry I just know that in two months' time, I have had two close friends become devestated by the results of porn. Maybe this "porn mode" isn't just for porn, but if it helps people become addicted to porn, its bad enough for me.

I still fail to see why family computers would have to be private. I fail to see why anyone would have to hide their surfing from somebody else unless they have some sort of reason to hide it. If you are at the job, your surfing should be honest. At home, your surfing should be honest. At the library, nobody knows who you are and it doesn't matter where you've been.

I understand the marketing. But I feel that if anyone has a temptation with porn, they should not download this new IE.

The reason for this is not so family members can't see where you have been, but unauthorized people who try and gain access to your computer for advertising reasons. Removing (which is the same as blocking) what websites you have been to has always been a feature on all browers.

I think I will switch browser.

To what? Firefox and Opera already has settings to disable any tracking of web sites. Even Safari has settings to remove the history daily. IE8 simply makes it slightly easier.

I KNOW....but they are calling it "porn mode" for a reason, and I have no doubt people will be using it as more than just against advertising.

Oh never mind.

Oh, I understand your frustration, but I think it is unfair to blame the name "Porn Mode" on IE8 (You can do the same thing in IE7). Who ever called it that and told everyone that you can block porn history with it is the one we should be upset with.

I guess that would be Fox News then...fair and balanced, with sex thrown in every article. :roll

I just have been kind of upset about my friends, and knowing that this can happen in any marriage, to any person, if they aren't watching out. And it makes me mad that software developers are trying to make it as easy as possible to do.

So true KJB_Princess, when people use their computer from banking and paying bills they cannot be to careful. And especially someone who uses a public computer

As I said, you and I are fortunate, we don't have to worry about such a problem but some do. It has to do with a lot more than just porn.

Bro. Matt has mentioned one important use 2 times.

Besides that, in Windows XP you could always delete your history, they have just made it much easier.

And it shall always be, things that can be used for good, they wil be some who will use it for bad.
