Isa 55:11
Gods Word will accomplish His purposes. It is His Word, that is blessed, not our delivery of it! Today’s “speaking” principles, or “principles of public speaking,” seem like manipulation and trickery. To sway, or influence a congregation, we need only the Holy Spirit, and His power. Methods to captivate the crowd, or “gimmicks” to bring about a certain affect to play on emotions, are, as I see it, ploys , worldly ploys, to “substitute” for the lack of Holy Spirit power. I realize that no one likes to listen to a “droll,” dull speaker, but why doesn’t the Word itself excite them? I enjoy good preaching, even if the delivery is bad! I would concentrate on what is said much more than the way it is expressed, and let God’s Spirit do the rest. We need not teach oration or public speaking to pulpiteers, we have too much of that already!
Motivational tactics are needed in the business world, but in the church, when people need constant motivation, we do not build (edify) them. When the motivator leaves, so does the motivation. We are not successful until we teach others to motivate themselves in the Word of God, and not the man preaching the Word. People should not need to be “primed” as a pump, or kick started, but fed the Word, and Jesus. He is the great motivator of men.

The sad fact is that many churches today have pastors who are not even saved. Being unsaved they are on their own and must resort to manmade tactics in order to draw or keep their crowd.

Of course there are other "Christian" preachers out there who are in it for the publicity, the money, or other reasons other than the glory of God. Becoming man-made dynamic speakers increases their popularity, their income, their status.

Our pastors son, at the leading of the Holy Ghost, was invited to become (and accepted) the associate pastors position in our church. He hadn't been out of college long and had done little preaching. He only actually preaches a few sermons a year. The first year he was in our church as associate pastor it was OBvious he was attempting to copy/model his dads manner of preaching. His messages were good, but...

Then one Sunday about a year after he had been in that position he preached and you could almost "see" the Holy Ghost at work in him. I remember telling my wife that I believed he had finally, as some say, "let go and let God". He had stopped "trying" and let the Holy Ghost guide his sermon and "Wow", what a wonderful difference! Since that day he has never again seemed to be trying to model is dad but rather to follow the leading of the Spirit of God. :amen:
