I've been thinking about this all day. One of Holster's replies (about the skunk) gave me the idea for a thread title.

On my way to church I pass the remains of a church which burned to the ground a long while back. No evidence remains of a church with the exception of some cut foundation sandstone steps and one other item I'll mention further on.

Behind where the church stood is a graveyard and many of the granite grave markers are visible as you drive by.

The other item remaining, giving away there was once a structure, is the mailbox. The mail box is still on a post just to the side of the sandstone steps. Of course behind the mailbox beside the steps you can't help but notice the grave stone markers.

Passing that church hundreds of times in the past I never noticed that mailbox until today. I wonder if there is mail in it? To whom might the mail be addressed? What might the letter say?

Maybe there are things others have heard or seen that have struck them as hiding a sermon or lesson.

reminds me of a story I wrote awhile back--not the mailbox, but a dilapidated old church that spoke of another time, and another generation. Maybe I'll post it sometime.

Don't keep us in suspense, stop and check that mail box and let us know what you find.

I'll go one better...I'll take a picture and post it. Also, because you asked...I'll open the mailbox. I'm thinking there are many sermons that could be developed from the scene. Like...

"Letters Too Late"
"Do You Know Your Next Step?"
"When The Church Is Raptured"
"No More Mail - No More Spirit"
"Down The Road Or A Step Up For Eternity"
"The Last Mail Call"
"Hold The Mail. Eternally, Yours"

I took the pictures on the way to prayer service this evening. I was mistaken about the steps...they are concrete but the old sandstone foundation blocks are scattered about. So here's a couple pictures and another sermon idea.

"Hold The Mail.
Eternally,
In Christ"

"What's your next step?"

Oh, what's in the mailbox?

Another sermon title:
"Invitations Are Locked"

I couldn't open the mailbox to see inside.

We have a few cemeteries around here that has a mail box, and or some other type of box with a note book in it. Visitors can sign it, them future visitors can look at it and see who has been there before them. I did not think of that until just now seeing your pictures.

In one such cemetery where my father's people are buried I looked back and saw where past relatives I never knew had visited, kind of neat.
