For my birthday this year, I didn't want to get any presents. Instead, I took the family on a one day vacation. There is a old city one hour south of where we live, and I decided we would go there for the day and walk around shopping, playing at the play grounds (which we found out there are very few there), reading at the library, such the like.

But, I didn't want to drive there so we took the Amtrak there. I have never been on a train ride, and was looking forward to it. I don't know who was more excited about the trip, the kids or me.

We had a great time, despite the rain. We walked into shops and found the bathroom and used the air hand dryers to dry us off before shopping. Thankfully, it stopped raining after the first hour and a half. But, after our dinner, it looked like it was going to start raining again, so we just headed to the train station and waited there - for 3 hours. We brought and bought activity books for the kids to do. Also, it didn't rain all of the 3 hours, so we took walks around the block.

Nathaniel got to come home with 2 spikes that hold the rails down. Right after we unloaded from the train, there was a crew there that began tearing up the tracks. Nathaniel saw a used spike laying on the ground and asked a worker if he could have it. The worker also gave him a new one to keep.

By the time we got home, the 2 youngest were out cold. All-in-all, it was a good day.
