I don't know any Spanish but I know German which is probably why I'll teach my kids that.

If you plan on living in the US I strongly suggest learning Spanish. Unfortunately due to uncontrolled illegal immigration the largest minority in our population will be largely non english speaking as well.

I have no intention of ever learning Spanish. If they wish to speak to me then they had better learn English. I worked part time with a Mexican one time and he didn't know much English. We got along well but I never used Spanish with him.

I agree with you Kevin. If they come to an English speaking country, they learn English. Just like you are learning Korean for when you move to Korea.

Tough for me - I'm living in a country where not only English and Chinese is spoken, but also Malay, Tamil, and various Chinese dialects, not to mention the languages of expatriate workers as well!

Yes, there are some countries like that but here in America we consider English to be part of our heritage and when Mexicans don't learn English, it threatens our cultural identity. :)

Well, it's a good chance to witness to them if you are good at Spanish.

Don't forget even though their immigration has caused Texas and Florida to lose their Baptist-majority, most of them are just nominal RCs. Rich and ripe for the harvest!

Katy-Anne and Kevin you'll get no arguments from me about the need for them to learn English. My point was that to work in many job in the future being Spanish / English bilingual will be not only a benefit but also a requirement. This is already the case in many Border States and some other place with very high concentrations of Hispanics. I don't like it either but unfortunately unless something extreme is done in the next 5-10 years that is going to be reality.

There are States where employers require those applying for jobs in Law Enforcement, Construction, Health Care, Customer Service, Manufacturing (especially supervision) and many other vocations to be bilingual. There is no law to prevent this requirement by employers either. Actually there are laws that make it difficult for employers to require their employees speak English. It stinks but those are the facts.

1Co 9:20 Heme hecho á los Judíos como Judío, por ganar á los Judíos; á los que están sujetos á la ley (aunque yo no sea sujeto á la ley) como sujeto á la ley, por ganar á los que están sujetos á la ley;

Calvario

lol

Yeah, me too!

I said,

Regardless if the US has English for it's mother tongue, there are millions of Hispanics living inside its borders, and whether you like it or not, they aren't going anywhere.

The Apostle Paul gave us good counsel.

1Co 9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

Well, then, if you are going to win someone to the Lord that He ahs given you the privilege of knowing, it would be reasonable to learn a little about them in order that Christ be glorified and preached on in the world.

Imagine! A mission field right there in your own back yard! And you tell me that there's no one that wants to listen to the gospel anymore. That's not true. There are a group of people thata re really friendly waiting for you to put forth your hand, make an effort and win them to Christ.

God bless you,

Calvary

lol, I knew a Mexican dude once. He was a great guy, really funny to hang around. He was typical Mexican though, a wheeler and dealer. :frog

I never spoke in Spanish to him though, I figured if he was in America, he should speak the language. :smile

Buen dicho Calvario!

I grew up in Guatemala, and no matter how much I don't agree w/people not learning English when they come here to the US, it's a matter of fact that they aren't going anywhere. We had to learn spanish and comply w/the rules of entering into the country "legally" and that's my biggest wish/complaint, that if they want to come here....do it legally! I have to speak spanish every day friends and family down there in Guatemala....It's a very good tool to have....Forget high school spanish...you have to get out there and just speak it in order to learn it well. I'll get off my :soap: now!

I have many friends from Nicarauga some came here legally some illegally. They are all legal now. I understand why they came here illegally (civil war and death threats) but I still believe the legal path is best. They all learned to speak english and they all are very productive members of society.
