Well, several days ago, I downloaded and installed AVG free (virus protection). After that finished, I uninstalled Norton and deleted the files out of the C: drive. I also installed Windows Defender (spyware, adware protection). It is free from Microsoft. Internet Explorer has a pop-up blocker and Windows has a firewall.

We're thinking about looking at Macs next time we need a computer. Anyone who is pro-PC please tell me why we shouldn't. :frog

MAC's are good; it's just that as long as you can buy a Windows PC for such reasonable prices, my personal opinion, the difference is not worth the money. If you keep your Windows program updated, and clean, it will perform and do 99% of what the average consumer will ever need.

Look at IBM, they have always had clout associated with their name and image; however, that is why they started the "Lenovo" product line. It is a secondary line for the IBM Company. It doesn't have quite the bells and whistles that the IBM frontline sports; but it is an excellent computer, that allows IBM to recapture some of the market share that they had been missing.

A MAC is a very good computer; but if you do not take care of it, then it too will dissapoint you (and a lot more, since you spent more on it).

Simple guidelines for buying a new system:

1-You do not have to have the monster hard drive; most of the "smaller" systems have 80-120 Gb, and this is really adequate. You, really only need the large HD's if you are running engineering programs, etc.

2-Do not buy a system that has less than 1 Gb of memory; memory capacity is your key to smooth performance. Preferable is 2 Gb. *remember, if you buy a system with smaller memory, say 512 Kb, and add let's say, a 1 Gb stick extra of memory; you will add capacity, but not speed. The system will only run as fast as the smallest allocation will process.

3-Make sure that you get a system with the media reader (9 in 1; 15 in 1; etc.) this will allow you to download from various memory cards, devices, cameras, etc.

4-Do not "believe that you just have to have, the biggest and baddest......moderation please. B & B cost money, but do not really add much more than "bragging rights".

5-Make sure that you get at least a 19" LCD monitor (preferably wide screen) The new monitors are a lot easier on your eyes, if you have to spend a lot of time at the computer.

6-Remeber that when you buy a new system; some of the programs on it may already be out of date; I looked at a "large" system last month at one of the big box stores, and they had a nicely equipped high end system on sale for about $1600. with taxes. But, I took the liberty of checking the programming on the display model and most of the installed programs were already in need of updating. Now, granted, updating for the most part is most times easy, but why should you have to update a new sytem and still have to pay "Cadillac" prices for it.

Just my thoughts for tonight..............

IMHO, I think this is very good advice.

I don't much like Macs because of the price.

Personally, I work with getting everyone's old computers running with Debian. With a system that is 2ghz, 512mb RAM, and 20 gigs of hdd space can perform unrealistic tasks on Linux (for example: making home video DVDs).

However! I am the administrator for several systems already, and I don't have time to talk Linux outside of work hours. I am not patriotic by any means. Christianity to me is more important.

So, yea, having said that, I think the previous post is good advice.
