I think with most styles of karate and kung fu, if you take away the religion behind it there is not much left. The whole basics of martial arts is to discipline the mind with occultic type meditation. I have seen shoalin monks do great feats of strength with their mind over matter practices. I have been looking at Kra Maga, Israeli fighting style. I have not really looked it up much,if it has any religious overtones or not. If anyone knows about it please fill me in. :box :B

Tired...My MIL says the same thing about Yoga. She says it is "Mind over matter" and without that...you don't have anything. This is an interesting topic. I really never thought much about it until this thread. My ex-husband and I removed my son from Karate lessons because of a scandal with the owner and Cocaine selling and use. :eek My ex-husband said..."A lot of good his Martial Arts did for him." :bonk: My ex is so funny about certain things. I pray for his salvation...he would make a GREAT Baptist!

I think the martial arts and some types of training give people a false sense of toughness. I had a friend who was taking tae kwan do. He was a brown belt and he said I couldn't take him down before he kicked me in the chest. This was all in fun just a little male bonding :lol . I wrestled in high school and I shot in and took him down before he could get his kick off. Sufficed to say he soon quit spending the money to buy his belts. He knows I am not tough so he realized that he would really get hurt if he messed with someone who was.

As with many things, ones motives and attitude make a great difference. Some get into such things to be "tough", some for the fitness and fun, others for the self-defense help.

A friend of mine came back from Marine Corp boot camp and told me he learned a move that was impossible to get out of. I allowed him to put me in that hold, though I was wondering how he would have got one in such a hold if they didn't cooperate, and within a couple of seconds I had him tossed across the coffee table

Many years prior to that, prior to my birth in fact, my Dad's brother came back from Navy bootcamp and went to where my Dad lived then and told him he was in great shape and learned to fight so he was going to whoop my Dad for the first time in his life. Younger brother got whooped again and never bothered to try again. :Green

I've always believed it's good to be prepared to fight if necessary, but to avoid such if at all possible and to never provoke a fight.
