I note from 2nd Samuel 15 v 7 that Absalom  started his rebellion after 40 years; from when does the 40 years start?

The Hebrew text say 40 years.

So 40 YEARS may not be literal 40 years (Ezekiel 4:4-6) just like "weeks" in the bible are not always literal weeks.

or...

40 years could be in reference to David. Absalom's rebellion takes place approximately 40 years after David's slaying Goliath when David first captured the heart's of the men of Israel.

"Forty years" most likely is referring from the time David was anointed king of Israel by Samuel. So after Fourty years of David's anointing as the righful king of Israel Absalom attempted to become King of Israel.
