I like the Lounge because anything can go within the rules..... so that is awesome....

Okay, What does Chapter 5 mean ? How and when does it apply ? I have briefly read that it has to do with apostasy. I'm not sure. Sometimes I'll read something and think it to be one way when it totally means something different. Eager to hear thoughts....

Here's a collaborative commentary:

Post Edited: Please do not post the entire chapter in the "New Living Translation" version as a commentary on the KJV. Please see the rules. Thanks... Seth Doty... :wink

This is about church discipline, this local church at Corinthians is instructed to take actions against a fornicator who is a member of this church.

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

1 Cor 5:1-6 (KJV)

So what does point or verse 5 mean, Does it mean he's gone apostate, or Does it mean let Satan take him down so far in his wrong doing that he crys out in repentence unto God for mercy while he is still in the fleshly body ?

No, he did not go apostate, but he did fall into sin, this sin bring shame of God, Jesus, and the local church.

The offence was commonly reported, that is the whole community knew that a member of the church was living in sin by committing fornication with his fathers wife. Such a thing brings shame of God, Jesus, and that local church. But if you will notice in verse 11 Paul gives other sins which would have the same punishment.

This church discipline, 1 Corinthians 5:5, only affect the outer man, not the inner man, that is he is expelled from this local church but he does not lose his salvation. And it is done out of love with hope that he will repent of this sin, and if he repents of his sin we are suppose to be welcomed him back into the church with open arms. When someone is expels from the church this means you withdraw fellowship from him or her, they cannot partake of the Lords Supper, they have no say in church business.

And it appears that this man did repent, This appears to be the same man spoke of in 1 Corinthians 5.

6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

2 Cor 2:6-8 (KJV)

Another thing to notice, Paul gave instruction to this local church to take these actions, not to the pastor, nor the deacons, not to some board, but to the local church.

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Cor 5:4 (KJV)

Here Paul say when ye are gathered together, lets go back an look at 1 Corinthians 1:1-2 to be sure who Paul is addressing where we will know for sure who is to take this action.

1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

1 Cor 1:1-2 (KJV)

Quite clear Paul is addressing the church of God which is at Corinth, and saying in 1 Corinthians 5:4, when ye gather together, that is when the church of God which is at Corinth gathers together, take this action against this man who is committing fornication.

I put this together rate quickly so I may not have been very thorough, but I hope it will help you understand Chapter 5.
