Researchers push for APA to destigmatize pedophilia [Excerpts]

Several well-known researchers recently made unexpected arguments on pedophilia at an academic conference in Baltimore.

Liberty Counsel Action's Matt Barber attended the conference, which was sponsored by B4U-ACT, a Maryland-based organization* of psychiatric practioners seeking to eliminate what it considers "tremendous barriers" among mental health professionals, the public, and "minor-attracted individuals" (pedophiles).

Barber says while at the conference he felt he was on a different planet, as the presenting professionals argued to remove pedophilia from the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). That, he believes, would mean pedophilia would no longer be considered a mental disorder.

"The entire focus of the event was on the victimhood of the pedophile," Barber accounts.

There was "very little concern for the children who are the victims of these individuals when they are raped, who these individuals lust after," he adds.

And he says the experts' discussions were focused on "destigmatizing pedophilia ... removing the stigma, and [getting] the public to stop demonizing pedophiles."

APA states it stands firmly behind efforts to criminally prosecute those who abuse and exploit children and adolescents. But Barber is concerned the APA is already moving toward declassifying pedophilia as a mental disorder "by saying that a pedophile is only a pedophile in their latest DSM...if they are distressed by their attractions or behaviors."

Barber believes that would bring the APA one step closer to de-classifying pedophilia as a mental disorder, as they did homosexuality in the 1970s.

Typical of Statists, they have no regard for children unless they can serve them politically. There is a reason that Vermont has become a haven for perverts, the state and many of its municipalities are run by Commies.

There are some shrinks who say that consensual adult/child sex can be good for both and laws against such should be abolished.

It's a short step from making the perversion of homosexuality legal and "normal" to making other forms of sexual perversion the same.

If you think about it at one time (up until the 70's) psychologists taught that homosexuality was a mental illness but now they teach not only that is it healthy but those who oppose it are mentally ill (i.e. "homophobic", phobias are a type of mental illness). Also, the common teaching now is that homos are born gay. So what stops them from saying a pedo is born that way? If he's born that way then it can't be abnormal. And anyway, "what is normal" like they are always debating about? Once they opened the floodgate to sexual perversaion who knows how far it will go.

I don't believe pedophile is a mental disorder, I believe it is simply sin at its worse. And of course those that treat mental illiness can't slove this, the solution is Jesus Christ. If they refuse to take Jesus as Savior, there is no cure for them.

The main problem with psychiatry/psychology is their denial of sin and attempts to use human reasoning to help or cure those they see.

Homosexuality used to be listed as a mental disorder but due to pressure from pro-homosexual groups they dropped that, which gave the secular stamp that homosexuality was not abnormal, but normal.

Once homosexuality is fully embraced as normal and legal there will be little standing in the way of every other sexual perversion being legally sanctioned.

I believe it's both sin and a mental illness.

So if its mental illness, them they have an excuse for what they do to children. I wholly disagree, there is no excuse for anyone putting children though the things they do.

I believe its the manifestation of a reprobate mind. It could be a mix of sin/sickness.

No they don't have an excuse. You can have a mental illness and still know right from wrong. In fact, most nut jobs still can discern. Romans 1 says that those who didn't retain God in their minds had their minds turned over to reprobation. Depravity can lead to mental illness. Also, many pedophiles were sexually abused when they were children. So something didn't develop right mentally and emotionally as they became an adult because of this experience.
