Would someone help me

with this phrase, "Romanam condere gentem." I'm fairly sure its Latin. I can't find a good translation on line. It's used in a book I'm reading.

I think it means "to found the Roman race."

Tanta molis erat Romanam condere gentem means, "Such a great task it was to found the Roman race."

Condere = to found
Romanam = Roman
gentem = people, race

Wow! I am actually learning something from my children's Latin books!

What always gets me is the French text that British and other European authors sprinkle liberally throughout their books. No doubt most of their readers can make out the meaning, but I can't understand it at all.
