We've been attending a new church for a while after bouncing around trying to find a church in town (we had moved and were attending an out of town church and needed to find something in the community here.) Everywhere we would go the sermons lacked conviction being afraid to mention the "S" word*, or were in the Seeker Sensitive vein.

Finally, we landed at an Independent and Fundamental Baptist church. Very similar to the little SBC church I was in as a younger boy when I lived with my Great-Grandparents.

I always joked "you know you've got a good pastor when he sermons make you think he's been spying on you all week."

Well, every single sermon that we've heard, both from the regular pastor, and six sermons by an evangelist during the Spring Revival were all things that my wife and I had been discussing either the day of the sermon or in the days before. We're talking easily over a dozen or more sermons so far, and even tonight... "wham", spot on! Even answering questions my wife had asked me that I didn't know the answer to!

I thank God for inspiring the pastor, and the evangelist (who grew up in this church) and for inspiring them to preach just what we needed (which may not necessarily what we wanted) to hear! :thumb

(*"S" Word = Sin - I guess the word doesn't go well in "growth-targeted" churches.)

Those churches also have other forbidden subjects like the "J" word = Jesus, the "B" word = Blood, even the "C" word = Church seems to be going the way of the dodo. Never ever mention the "H" word just tell them all about God's Love and teach them the Golden Rule and then they won't have to give up any of their favorite sins - oops I said the "S" word didn't I?

What is sad is that our church has a good sized congregation, with a large amount of people in the demographics these other churches think they are catering to (young professional families.) Preaching the truth didn't "scare" them away. I'll zip it now before I get on an "emergent/seeker friendly" rant :smile

The preaching at our church is just like you described! We think it is just so great when we discuss something, and the Lord lays it out for us in a message from the pulpit! Of course, when they mention the S word, we are happy about that, too - not always when our toes are being stomped on, but after we take care of things, it's a blessing!

Oh - and don't forget the big forbidden R* word!!!

Sounds like you've found a good church, I would suspect that God sent you where you needed to be. Hold fast to the Apostles doctrine, make sure missionaries are supported and outreach has the appropriate emphasis. Praise God and tell others what you've found.
