I have received a publishing contract with Tate Publishing for a book I have been writing, I am interested in hearing about anyone's experience with Tate Publishing (Mustang, OK). If anybody has worked with Tate Publishing could you tell me about them, Pro's/Con's or anything I should be aware of?

Thank You

If they want you to invest money to get your book published.................RUN LIKE THE WIND! If they are legit and they think you have a product that will make them money, they'll front the expenses from editing, to printing, to marketing and distribution.

Could you fill in some details for me, I've never written before now, so I have no experience to draw on when it comes to getting published, but from what I have read/researched concerning publishing, a large percentage of first time Authors have to pay to get published, it's seems like a very, very small percentage are actually published expense free the first time. The percentage is much higher for an Authors second book, because publishing companies can look at first book sales records to determine if it is worth publishing a second book. And I have talked to a few Authors who have told me they had to self publish their first couple of books before they were picked up by a publisher. Self publishing as far as I can tell is very expensive and then you have to market it yourself. So help me out here and tell me why a publisher asking for an author investment is bad?

BTW I have an offer coming form a second publisher now, so I'll have to compare contracts when it gets here, but the reason I was specifically asking about Tate Publishing is because they are a Christian based publishing house.

Thanks for any help and comments.

Hi, I was reading your post - and although I know nothing about Tate publishing, I can tell you that is not true that first time authors have to pay to be published. You do have to put the time in and do your homework, and of course self-publishing is always an option. Any legit publishing house will not ask you for a dime, though. I am a writer, have been for years, and in my earliest years fell for a few scams myself. Most legit publishers won't even preview your work unless it comes in through an agent - (when you attempt to send it in yourself they call it "unsolicited material", and unless you include a postage paid return envelope you won't even get your manuscript back - it will just wind up in their trash bin). I highly suggest you do some internet research on this publishing company, check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any complaints lodged against them, and another great resource I have always recommended to writers looking to publish outside of the self publishing world is the Guide To Literary Agents (there are others like this one, but this one is pretty thorough and gives you examples of query letters and book proposals, as well as a break down of current agents and what genre's they are currently seeking - and whether or not they will work with new authors). Please, please do your homework on all potential publishing houses and potential agents. It is unfortunate that there are many people in this world who are only in the business of taking advantage of people who don't know the inner-workings of the industry. I hope this information helped.
Blessings,
Sandra
