An Older Christian Woman Puts Today’s Compromised Preachers to Shame

At a time when so many of our Christian leaders are guilty of compromising the gospel before the media, dishonoring the Lord as they try to make God’s Word palatable to the world, it was an older British woman—nearly 70 and the owner of a bed-and-breakfast—who displayed a backbone of steel, a deep and consistent faith, and a theological clarity while being grilled on national TV. Cheers for Hazelmary Bull!

Hazelmary and her husband, Peter, already in his 70s, owned and operated a bed-and-breakfast in Cornwall, England, for three decades. Five years ago, they refused to rent a double-bedded room to a homosexual couple, since they only rent these rooms to married men and women, as stated plainly on their website.

The two men were offended and took the Bulls to court, and this Christian couple was found guilty of hurting the feelings of the gay couple and were fined nearly $6,000.

The Bulls are now appealing that decision to the U.K.’s Supreme Court, although due to decreased business they have had to close down their bed-and-breakfast. Since the court case, they have also suffered personal death threats as well as vandalism to their building, but they have not backed down from their convictions.

I don't think it was 5 years ago, but more recently.  The law changed one or two  years ago to say that you cannot discriminate. The day the law came into force, Herne Bay Court, a Christian holiday and conference centre, closed saying they could comply with that law.  Herne Bay is about five miles from our church and the chef and some of the staff  came to our services from time to time.

It's encouraging to see individual Christians taking solid stands even as it's saddening to see so many Christian "leaders" who either water down everything they say or they mince words so depending upon how one listens to them they could appear to be on two sides at once.

It must be a dilemma for people in such a case.  Do you stand firm and get fined and have to pay compensation to those who are "hurt"?  Or do you close down so that you don't have to compensate such people?

Yes that would be a difficult situation to have to face.

I've worked in a couple places where I was told I could be fired for my beliefs, that I should keep my beliefs to myself even when someone asks me about something and that sort of thing. I never went out of my way to turn a workplace into a stage for preaching, but I was open and honest about my faith and my biblical viewpoints, beliefs and principles I live by.

I was never fired or even reprimanded, but several people would cringe when I spoke biblically about matters such as homosexuality after someone else brought the subject up. I've also had supervisors give me a look and say "I never heard a thing, in fact, I wasn't even here" as they turned and walked away.

Its coming to the point that there's going to be some occupations, business, that the Christian will not be able to partake of. And if they do they will have to suffer the consequences if they refuse to obey the laws of the land, & not take a stand in court trying to defend their self for following God. That is suffer for the sake of God, even rejoicing for the privilege instead of going to the law trying to prevent their self from suffering for the sake of God.

Yet most Christian wants to follow a God that people such as Joel Osteen preaches about, not the one taught of in the pages of the Holy Bible.

While they didn't specifically site my Christianity as a reason, I was once passed over for a promotion that absolutely should have been mine. I was told the reason was because they knew I wouldn't compromise when it came to things like "fudging the numbers", assigning work details, relating information from the top down, and that sort of thing.

So, because they knew I wouldn't lie for them, they knew I wouldn't spread their false stories and rumors, they knew I wouldn't play favorites, that I wouldn't play their political games, and they knew I would speak openly against such in meetings, I didn't get the promotion.

I had been there for years, was the only one in that department with a Bachelor's degree, the only one with experience on every job in that department, and being in my late 30s at the time I also had age and maturity most others in the department didn't have. Even so, they gave the job to a young woman (only 19 or 20) who was the girlfriend of one of the supervisors sons, and she had only been working there a matter of months and had a dismal record during that time.

As it all turned out it didn't matter much. Downsizing saw that department closed down and those of us who were left were transferred into another department until eventually downsizing and poor treatment of the employees saw most of us phased out or leaving on our own.

The girl who got the promotion made a mess of everything she touched, or more accurately neglected, so that her bosses kept having to cover for her to cover their own selves for having promoted her. After a few months that girl got tired of "all the hard work" (she usually didn't do anything but stand around talking) and left.
