I never heard about this until after the election - this was supposedly one of those things that were leaked afterwards, wasn't it?

If they recognized it as a hoax and retracted within minutes, why didn't we see any retractions before this?

I think this was just an attempt, like the bogus stuff with Dubya and his time in service that knocked Dan Rather out.
