This is a Christian message board, yet you are promoting movies filled with the occult and sorcery. A little bit of a contradiction there.

Jerry: Do you consider anything that even so much as mentions "the occult and sorcery" to be inappropriate for Christians? Even when it is presented in a fictional way that is clearly not intended to foster a sincere belief in the legitimacy of "the occult and sorcery"?

I'd like to know exactly what "the occult and sorcery" is. I saw two of the movies the op referenced and I didn't catch the parts your referencing.

Feel free to study it out. Those movies are filled with magic, psychics, the undead, and other things associated with the occult. The Bible absolutely forbids the people of God having anything to do with that. Read Deuteronomy 18 for starters. Then look up these NT passages: Galatians 5:19-21 and Revelation 21:8 and 22:15. Those aren't things to take lightly or be "entertained" by.

I think the difference between the material you are OBjecting to in the movies mentioned and that being dealt with in the scriptures you referenced is that the material in the movies is fiction. The subject matter of the scripture was a sincere threat which people truely believed in and took refuge in as a legitimate alternative to the Hebrew God and the God of the NT. It's totally different.

Please consider this for comparison's sake: The golden calf worshiped as an idol, in direct contradiction of God's commandment, is no doubt an evil sin placed here by Satan. But applying your rationale being used in the current conversation, that would make stuffed animals, or toy farm sets, just as abominable.

The stuffed animals and toys are not made/intended for idol worship anymore than the movies at issue are intended to foster worship (or even sincere belief) in the occult or sorcery.

To add even more to this, does anyone even actually believe that the occult or sorcery is real? I don't give it any more credence than I give Budda or the hundreds of Hindu gods. It's just all make believe.

It doesn't matter if anyone "believes" it is real. God is not stupid and He Himself said to stay away from it.

A stuffed animal is not evil - however, if it was a stuffed animal of a pagan god, I think God would have a prOBlem with that as His Word in various places tells us not to make images of God or of false gods.

The Bible many times warns us of the evil of our imaginations - so if we are being entertained by evil, that is wrong. Sorcery and the occult are always condemned in the Word of God; therefore being entertained by them is also wrong. If God considers lust and unjustified anger towards our brethren in our hearts the equivalent of the sins itself, then by all means He considers those being entertained by evil as guilty of the evil to some extent.

Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

I do think we have to be careful. Not all things that are fiction are uplifting to a Christian. I somewhat regret some of the movies I saw while I was bored a few nights around Halloween. :P

As far as POTC, the first one was hilarious and has a fantastic soundtrack, great plot and great lines. Every movie after that was horrible, IMHO. I couldn't stand watching them and turned the second one off half-way through. The third one I watched/skipped through on youtube.
