Four Lepers
2 Kings 7: 1-16
These lepers were used of God in a mighty way to be a blessing to Israel. Keep in mind, these men were outcasts; they were the scorn of men, the lowest of the lowly; they were despicable and disgusting and the dredges of the city, not worthy to even enter it, let alone be a part of its citizenry. God used the baser things of the world to confound the wise, as He said in the New Testament book of 1 Corinthians. These sin-laden and diseased creatures that no one wanted to associate with, or even get close to, lest they catch the same terrible disease, were the very men that saved the city from hunger. They saved a city of hypocrites! Though shunned by all “good” men, and thrown out of the city to fend for themselves, God used them. He often uses the undesirable to accomplish that which is desired.
What a blessing that God did not use a dignitary—an emissary to the king, or some other VIP, who were all locked up in the city, and would not come out for fear of the Syrians. There is an amazing lesson here for us; God uses the lowly to bless the mighty, and so the mighty are not always the mighty!
These lepers rejoiced in the fact that they were used of God. They could have kept all the provisions for themselves, and flourished, but they, in spite of bad treatment, shared the blessings of God with those within the walls. Kindness usually reciprocates kindness, but whether it is returned or not, it is right to show love to others; for their welfare, their well-being, and their growth in the things of the Lord.
