Building wide is significantly cheaper than building up.

Land is very expensive, add maintenance, and parking.

Buying land is cheaper than building up in most cases.Ā  You asked why do churches build up, and it is because it is cheaper in most places to buy land and build wide. One example is that an elevator has to be put in and here and that costs around $100,000. much cheaper to buy a little extra land. Each year it needs inspections and costs in the thousands to maintain.

Not sure what steeples have to do with anything about this topic....anyways I'm moving on here.

For many christians, a church must have one. Traditions, did I spell it correct steeples, root top on a church.

Here it's cheaper to build up than to build wide. But, it varies by locale! In some counties here in Tennessee it really is less expensive to build wider....

We have so many regulations when building up that it is ridiculous. With elevators, hvac systems, fire sprinklers and more. It's crazy. Residential is a different story.

Here when they build up, most of the functions that would involved handicapped or elderly who would need an elevator are held on the ground floor. So, that takes care of that. Our regulations are starting to get out of hand, but some churches/Christian schools are still opting to build wider for some reason, even though it's more expensive. I guess many of them are still looking at future expansion. Smart move on their part. Believe it or not, it's been ore expensive of late to build up in residential....yet, most of the contractors are doing just that. The homes they do that with are so close together, if someone in one house runs out of toilet paper, they could just reach out the bathroom window into the neighbors house and grab their TP! LOLĀ

Here in Florida, some of these million dollar homes, you can jump from one roof to the other, they are so close. Lawn, what lawn.

I know...it's the same way here...you can mow the law with a weed whacker!Ā
