As someone who worked a drive thru for Burger King, I absolutely understand not letting someone order at the window. Here is why. Drive thru times are monitored, and if you take longer than three minutes from the time the person drives up to the box to the time they get to the window, it is the drive thru operator that gets into trouble, no matter why it took so long. Doesn't matter if an unhappy customer sat there yelling for five minutes...you get into trouble for not getting them away quick enough. If they order at the window instead of the box, it takes so much longer and the drive thru operator, if they have too many like that, will lose their job for incompetence when it wasn't their fault to begin with.

I worked at McD's and nobody loses their job over slow drive through times...although I agree that's probably why they won't let her do it.

Guess it depends on which McD's or Burger King then since I've worked for both and both had that policy.

With some of these fast food places it depends on who is running them. I knew a McD's some years ago that if you didn't fit in with the young woman managers clique she would push the rules hard on you until she could fire you; which didn't take long.

Meanwhile, those in her clique could do almost as they pleased and never have to worry about getting fired.
