I like C H Spurgeon's daily readings.

These include:

Morning and Evening

Faith's Cheque Book.

Treasury of David.

I really like Spurgeon's warm hearted style of writing.

I've read Morning and Evening. We have Treasury of Psalms. I've never read it, but do plan on it...

The students in our college have to read and outline a certain number of Spurgeon's Sermons during each school year. My husband had the entire set of sermons when we married, so he had an advantage. His sermons are something else! Each point could be two or three sermons in and of themselves!

Ty.

There is something very heartfelt and engaging about the way Spurgeon appeals to the reader (and listener; a lot of his writings were originally preached, of course). It's as if he identifies with the sinner's predicament but lovingly points them to the Savior. (I never get a sense that Spurgeon wants to beat up his readers or that he sees himself as a sort of political power broker.) Instead, I sense a very tender heart which in the light of eternity, patiently, affectionately, earnestly challenges his readers to consider their ways and turn to the Savior while there is yet time.

I agree with you - and, likely, that was (along with the massive praying done by him, his wife and the church) one of the reasons his church was always so full!

Happy Christian:

He was only 56 when he died in 1892, Spurgeon was. Amazing to think what by God's grace he achieved. He is so warm and friendly that it's almost as if I knew him personally. Edited by farouk

PS: Ms HC

You're right about the praying bit. With Spurgeon's sermons you get the sense that he has beforehand agonized in prayer before the Lord during his sermon preparation. This is very commendable.

farouk, I don't know if you ever heard the story of a man giving a tour of the church to people? He told them he would show them the furnace room. They wondered why he would want to show them that, but went along. He opened a door to a room in the basement...and there was no furnace. He said this was the room where men gathered to pray while CS was preaching - the furnace room, prayer to keep the preaching hot!

Yes, I heard this story. It was either at New Park Street or at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Probably the Met. Tab.

Great story and very important.

I always, always feel it important when possible to attend the prayer meeting before our Gospel preaching service. Like as if God would think: why should I bless if you Christians don't even think it's important? Edited by farouk

BroMatt:

Well, they could do far worse. There's something almost timeless about the content of Spurgeon's sermons, I feel.
