question about homeschooling

I agree, Michelle! Some folks want children but they don't want the responsibility that comes with actually raising children. Public school is a way for them to "get the kids out of their hair" for several hours a day, even if they are doing nothing more than sitting around the house all day.

Was there a high school back in biblical times? If they attended anything, it was only religious education.
Some states like PA will need you to be a high school graduate to legally homeschool. If not having a high school diploma were a sin then almost every biblical person and most of our American ancestors, including most of the founding fathers would all be in deep sin. Go back to the 1800s... you had to be at least 16 to test to be a teacher... that is not a high school diploma age... that is not a college age...

If it bothers you to not have a diploma, why not try a GED program. There are ones that you can do at home for a minimal cost. Some of the smartest people I have known never went to college.

What is more important, that they be educated by their mother who loves the Lord or that they receive a diploma from the world? Which means more in eternity?
With all the programs out there today...that do most of the teaching for you ...you will be fine... it will be scary at first.... pray ... pray ... pray.... you are the best teacher your children will ever know.... you love the Lord....
I find I am learning more now by teaching my children than I ever did in school myself.... God bless...

I am home school all the way! But I have heard people say that if the mother is a high school drop-out then she should not home school her kids (even though it is Biblical). What do you all think?

Katy-Anne

This is an old post, but I laughed outloud when I read it!

I am a high school drop out... and not one bit ashamed. I was, indeed, saved at the time of my exodus and left with my mother's approval. I went on to test "out" of my GED classes. Oh... and I was in honors and college-credit courses when I dropped out.

After a very successful and award-winning career in the United States Navy... as a journalist, mind you... I am now homeschooling my children, quite successfully.

My experiences and opinion of the typical school structure are two of the primary reasons I educate my children outside of the conventional classroom. If I were given the opportunity to send my children to a private Christian school for FREE, I would still educate them myself.

What might be a good idea for a young child who responds well to educational videos (like leap frog and that sort of thing) and excels at video games' date=' but doesn't care for books and bookwork?[/quote']

John -

We've had great success with many of the "Baby Einstein" series - the older ones. Mozart is music, Picasso is color and art, etc. My almost-four-year-old son has also learned a great deal about music (terminology, tempo, etc.) from the "Little Einsteins" show.

Are you referring to the Leap Frog videos? We have some on Phonics and Math that have been a help - my son enjoys them more than my daughter did. She's more of a reader than a watcher!

As for video games, we bought the children a VTech VFlash and the game that came with it - Jumping Bean Island - is a hit with my son AND my hubby! :thumb It's one of those instances where the player learns without realizing it... the best way to learn, in my estimation!

Only warning - and this applies to any video series, book or other medium - use discretion! Today I had an episode on the television while I was ironing and they focused on a woman astronaut who was the "first blah blah blah" to go into space. Okay... so what? What's important here, that she was a woman or that we are able to explore space? I would go with the latter! Of course, this is PBS we're talking about so I'm not terribly surprised.

Another problem I have with many of the tv/video programs is that they are humanistic "you can do it" drivel instead of giving honor unto God as the One Who alone gives the desire and ability. Even religious materials fall prey to this trend.

Hey John - after seeing some of the great blogs on the Web I decided to build one focused on our educational pursuits. I had the great privilege of linking to one from a user on this board (Gentle Learning) and she inspired me.

See if you can pull this one up - there isn't much there, but I like the simple layout and user-friendly features of the site.

That is one of the few "family" photos we have. I love photography and have made a bit of money freelancing (I was trained in photography and journalism through the Navy) but it's hard to set a camera to "auto" and then run across a field of rocks to get a group shot with me included! That shot was taken when we first arrived in Washington at Snoqualmie Falls. Some fellow Louisiana natives saw my LSU t-shirt, we struck up a conversation... and got some photographic services! :)

Hey' date=' Jen, why don't you post some more pics of that glorious place??!!?? :lol[/quote']

Alright LuAnne - are you being a smarty pants (or skirt -as the case may be) or are you serious? I have sooo many photos on the main family page (spinnerscorner.spaces.live.com) that I believe it may be gumming up the works. I just opened a Photo Bucket account and we'll see how that goes. I like the slide show aspect and the idea of having the images in high res. The MSN account compresses the images and distorts them.
