We have used a TV in the past, we currently do not have one, and if I did, it wouldn't be my preference. My two 10th graders watch DVD together on hubby's laptop, my 7th grader uses a portable DVD player and a set of headphones. I really like the portable DVD player option. We bought one with a larger screen and he can work at the table easily and put his things away when he is done quickly. (The same is true for the laptop) The headphones also keep distraction for him to a minimum.

I'm not familiar with portable DVD players. Could you tell me more about the larger screen portable DVD player? Is there somewhere on the internet, like Amazon.com or somewhere, that I could maybe see one?

Right now we don't have a computer or TV he could use for this so if we decided to go with A Beka I would have to buy something; either a small TV just for that use, or a computer or perhaps one of these portable DVD players.

Sorry it took me a while to respond, John....I'd forgotten that I'd posted on this today! The one we bought was a Phillips 10" screen size. I remember it not being cheap, but it works well. Someone might argue that some of the portable ones are about the cost of a TV. I'm sorry, I hate TVs. :Bleh http://www.amazon.com/Philips-PET1000-1 ... 080&sr=1-3 Here's a link to one like we bought. It looks the same except ours says PET1002 instead of PET1000. I don't think dh got it from amazon, but I do know he mail ordered it--he is a pro when it comes to getting the very best deal. :thumb The one he ordered come with adaptors and everything..........you can even take this puppy in the car on long road trips. We've only done it once for a several hour trip.......Blue's clues and Winnie the Pooh saved the day for our 4 year old.

Thank you very much! I'll look into this.

Not as a system, per se. I used a lot of their books when I was homeschooling Josh. They have an eclectic mix of curricula that can be good for someone who likes variety.

I see they have a plan that, upon completion, will provide a diploma and transcripts. This has come up as something we might be wanting.

Our oldest son is about an average student in most areas but he's not overly motivated unless he comes across something he actually likes.

I think a change of curriculum might be good for him now; he's been doing Lifepacs for several years now, but I want to go with a Christian source if at all possible.

If he were brighter and/or more motivated I would probably want to go with Abeka but their cost is much higher and since we don't think he would do well with their higher level classes, that's probably not a good idea right now.

We use a tv for one child and a laptop 15" for the other. My oldest loves using the computer, while my son (younger) does better with the tv. We have tried him with the laptop and it is not big enough for him and he begins to wander.

We prefer the computer as it makes many other reference materials readily available, to include the internet and other programs loaded on the PC.

We started home schooling in 1990. We tried ACE and Landmark before we found Switched-on Schoolhouse. We have used Switched-on Schoolhouse as a complete curriculum for the last 8 years. It covers grades 3 through 12. I purchased grades 3 through 8 and was given grades 9 through 12 for doing some beta testing for them. It is published by Alpha Omega. The best thing about Switched-on Schoolhouse is that parents can use the curriculum year after year without having to pay any extra user fees.
