Homesteading with no land and no space

I am wanting to get as homestead minded as possible as I believe this will render great health and financial benefits to our family and make us more self-sufficient (although I'd prefer to say God-sufficient lol).

I am interested in learning about canning like I mentioned in another thread. I want to grow some herbs and things and learn how to make tinctures and medicines and soaps and lotions for our family and maybe to sell at local markets etc.

Do any of you guys do any "homesteading" activities with little land or space? What are your secrets, and what aspects of it do you enjoy?

Is there anyone nearby with whom you could share a garden? We did that when I was a kid. We lived in an apartment but a nice neighbor down the street let us share in his garden.

Also before we moved here (and also before the gas prices sky-rocketed), my sister, mom and I were going to co-garden. They live near each other and I live about an hour away. My mom has a huge garden space available so we were going to garden together. I have my own garden space now and I'm very thankful for it.

You can build beds that border your house if the landlady will allow it to grow herbs and such. Mint and comfrey grow well. Other than that, container gardening is the way to go. You can do that on the ground as well as with hanging containers.

Haha I think it is a case of Home Depot, here I come! Either that or the plant section of Wal-Mart. Which is better/cheaper?

Most excellent ideas. :amen: :thumb :goodpost:

I've seen veggies and herbs intermixed with the flowers in their beds around houses. "Skyscraper" gardening is also effective. I.E. A tall pole or pipe anchored into the ground and many planters tied to it at various levels all the way up and down the pipe..

If one has access to the roof of their apartment complex they could ask for permission to container garden up there in 5-gallon buckets.
