A poem I wrote in 1999..."In Each Life"

I wrote this poem during a very difficult time in my life. I was facing having to go disabled, losing everything we had, and having to file for bankruptcy. It was also a time when the world thought everything was going to collapse because of Y2K. If we only knew then what we know now! I have a compilation of poetry and short stories that I've written over the years, as well as a couple of books I've written that I'm editing before having them published. I hope this poem is helpful to those who read it.

In Each Life

It’s strange to look back

At the years that have passed

When you realize

You’re growing near to the last

Of the years that the Lord

Has given to you

There so much you have done

Yet still so much to do

You were foolish when younger

But you wasted your time

Now you’re trying to make up

For what you left behind

But you know that it can’t be

For we each have our day

When we must give an answer

For what was given away

When we foolishly thought

That forever we’d live

Invincible, strong

And have still more to give

Now reality sets in

And we fall to our knees

And lament the time wasted

Praying God hears our pleas

And He will hear those pleas

If he’s lived in our heart

And forgive us and cleanse us

And help us restart

Though we may never reach

The point where we’d have been

The Lord knows our hearts

And forgives all our sins.

So put your life squarely

Into His hands

While He has you work

While He makes the plans.

And in the end we will hear

Good servant, well done

And dwell in the presence

Of Father, Spirit and Son.
