Wanted to post this in here away from all the recent trolls on the board!!! I am a little confused as to the doctrine of justification. Preachers preach that justification is basically that through the blood of Jesus, God sees us as sinless. So, then, if we appear sinless to God, how then does He chasten us for sinning? :? Recently heard a good preacher preaching on justification and how God loves us, and that we do not have to do good works to make God love us, but rather we do good works BECAUSE God loves us. Which is good preaching, but then... How do you deal with this doctrine if you were raised to fear the punishment of God each time you mess up in …

Giants of the Missionary Trail Adoniram Judson Apostle of the Love of Christ in Burma by Eugene Myers Harrison There it was -- the site of the historic Let-ma-yoon prison, famous for its heathen horrors and its Christian conquests. Soon after commencing my missionary service in Burma, I went to Mandalay, then through the dense jungle growth to the memorial slab marking the site where Adoniram and Ann Judson, America's first missionaries, endured such incredible sufferings as ambassadors of Christ. As I stood there I recalled the confident prediction Judson made in 1816, in his first tract for the Burmese people: "About one hundred or at most t…

Daily Devotional for Monday May 1st/06 The following is taken from chapter five of The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Galatians by Oliver B. Greene: Verse 19: "For I through the Law am dead to the Law, that I might live unto God." Is the believer under Law? Is the Christian subject to the Law of Moses? In Paul's day, that question was already a burning issue. The Bible is crystal clear in giving the answer to the question, "Is the believer under the Law?" Paul answers: "Ye are not under the Law, but …

He Slept Through God's Warning Jonah 1:5 'Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.' God had commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach against them because of their wickedness. Jonah, however, was afraid to go because of the reputation the Ninevites had. So, instead of heading to Nineveh, he decided to go the opposite way to get as far from Nineveh as possible. He tried to run from the presence of the Lord but as he soon found out that was not possible…

Resting On The Promises One of my all-time favourite hymns is: Standing On The Promises (Hymn by R. Kelso Carter) Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Through eternal ages let His praises ring, Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God. Chorus: Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God my Savior; Standing, standing, I'm standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises that cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I now can see Perfec…

Be A Witness Acts 1:8 'But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.' Christ told them that the Holy Ghost would come upon them and that they would receive power. After they received the Holy Ghost they were to go out in all the earth to be witnesses of Christ. They were now to take the Gospel message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ into the world so that the world might be saved. This was His last command before leaving this earth and it applies just as much now as it did t…

Hidden Treasures From Proverbs 2 My best friend since I got saved is a man named James Strong. I met him about two or three years after I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ. He really helped me find verses in the Bible - to find those passages where I could just remember some of the words but not the references, gave me oodles and oodles of verses to look up on any subject I could think of. Then later, he even taught me how to find the definitions for each word in my King James Bible. That was such a help! In fact, to this day, he has been my most consulted Bible resource - not the man himself, but a book he put together: Strong's Exhaustive Concordance.…

Mustard Seeds And Mountains Matthew 17:19-21 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. As a younger believer I remember reading passages like the one above and thinking that if I only believed strong enough, I could move mountains. I did not have a clue that the Lord here wasn't referring to literal mou…

Jesus - The Sinner's Surety Tonight I had an opportunity to preach on a passage of Scripture that has, for years, been a blessing to me. As many of us are familiar with the events of Joseph's life and the situation with his brethren, I will just recap it here, but would encourage you to reread it to refresh your minds. Jacob married two sisters, and between them and their concubines had a total of twelve sons. He had two sons by his favourite wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. In Genesis chapter 37, we learn that Joseph has become the favoured son of Jacob, because of being the elder of the two sons by his favour…

Does anyone find that if a pastor has been at a church for awhile, and then hires a young couple to assist...that the church is so enthralled by the new energetic faces that they begin to favor the new ones over the pastor and his wife? Has anyone found it common for friction to happen between a pastors family and asst family? I know I have been in churches where the pastors wife didn't seem to like me very well and I am not sure if friction is a common thing...and if so, how to avoid this?

Do you or your pastor have a church secretary? If so, why? Are you ever alone in church with her? We don't have one and don't plan on it for a long time, but just popped in my head and I'm curious.

The following is the message one of our preacher boys preached this morning for Mother's Day: Being The Mother God Wants You To Be By David Garner Psalms 127:1-3 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. The commentator Matthew Henry had this to say ab…

They Stepped Over The Line Jeremiah 15:6 'Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.' The children of Israel had turned away from God to follow after idols. They had backslidden on God with no thoughts of ever turning back to Him. Because of this God was going to stretch out His hand against them. God was weary with repenting over the children of Israel. He had held His hand back from judging them but now they had gone too far. They had stepped over the line and now God was going to have to judge them. If we are not car…

Kingly Lessons - None Like These Or Lessons From The Kings No doubt there are many lessons we can learn from the kings of Israel and Judah: from their examples, we can learn what to do to please the Lord and what not to do. We can see which kings God honoured and why, and which kings He was against and why. Two verses that I have always been blessed by (and likewise been encouraged/exhorted by) are regarding two different kings of Judah: King Hezekiah - 2 Kings 18:5-7a He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave to the…

Jehu or Jehonadab? - Desiring A Zeal That Will Last One Bible character that intrigued me as a young believer is Jehu, a man that the Lord anointed king. He was used of God to wipe out Baal worship in the land of Israel, and to destroy the remnant of Ahab and Jezebel's ungodly line. When God called him, he had a lot of zeal, which inspired others to likewise be fervent for the Lord: 2 Kings 10:15-16 And when he (Jehu) was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand…

I guess it is about time I tackled this new month. I had to take time from these devotionals to go to my Dad's funeral in Saskatchewan, and really think about some aspects of the trip. This is a reply to a mailing list I am on: 1. How was your week? One of the toughest of my life. Had my Dad's funeral six months after my Mom passed away. 2. Anything interesting happening this week? Learned some things about my Dad that I never knew before. I used to think that it was me specifically that my Dad never wanted to talk to when I called home - now too late I learned that it was his sickness and pain that hindered him from wanting to come to the phone - t…

I am going to try to phrase this question the way I am thinking it... First of all I do not believe pastors have the authority to rule someone's personal life unless its heading towards major sin... I know a pastor who will tell you whether or not to buy a house, (and then get mad if you don't obey) etc, and I think that's crazy. However... Can we define "pastoral authority"? For instance, if the pastor is restricted to chapter and verse, then things like Sunday School and soulwinning days are completely optional and should not be deemed important. Its "extracurricular". However if we are responsible to obey the pastor as an authority, then to us, the "extra" …

The following is posted for the purpose of consideration, for digging in to Hebrews 10:25 a little bit more and challenging our attitudes toward church attendance. I believe this article clarifies some things, and has actually made me think a bit more about this issue. For the record, I believe it is a sin to deliberately skip out on church, to miss it except for when we are sick or providentially hindered. Too often we have our excuses, but what did God say? The author comments on the word "forsaking", and uses an example to show that EVEN once something can be forsaken, depending upon the attitude of the person turning away from it. If we set out to deliberately …

Its amazing. We had over 70 in church for Easter Sunday morning. During the sermon dh added in the fact that EVERY Sunday is "resurrection Sunday" (which is why we even worship on Sunday) and that Jesus is alive every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, and that we should want to come and worship Him together every service that we are not providentially hindered. So....we have 30 Sunday night. :( Anyway please pray for our church, we are seeing some good things happening, but on the other hand WAY too few of our members really want to see our church explode for God, and so when only a small percentage of people are putting forth effort, only sma…

Recently, I asked advice on how to handle a divorce situation that was occurring in our church in Anita. I was finally able to confront the wayward husband last night. I began by asking his side of the story, and he concluded with "I've already made up my mind that this is what I'm going to do." He did listen to everything I had to say without interrupting me. In fact, he agreed with everything I said. But as I looked into his eyes, all I could see was pride and arrogance. He knew he was walking through the threshold of sin with his eyes wide open, and he knew he faced chastisement from God, and he knew he faced church discipline. His response? "I know all that, …

Giants of the Missionary Trail George Grenfell A Light in Congo Darkness by Eugene Myers Harrison Huge crocodiles dozing on the muddy banks of the mighty Congo sullenly opened their beady eyes to gaze at the strange monster, then hastily plunged into the river. The cause of their alarm was a small steamer, named the Peace, the first ship ever to breast the Congo waters under steam power. The crocodiles were not alone in being alarmed at the sight and sound of the throbbing steamer. Frequently the Africans were so startled they fled pell-mell into the jungles or were so aroused they swarmed out in their canoes to do battle. Coming in sig…

Have A Vision To Keep You Alive Proverbs 29:18 'Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.' Everyone of us ought to have a vision. We ought to have an idea of something we would like to see accomplished at some point in the future. 1. We need a vision in our Christian walk. We ought to strive to be more Christ-like everyday of our lives. The very name Christian means "little Christ" and that is exactly what we ought to be. Too many saved people believe themselves to be good Christians merely because they go to church at least once a week. However, it takes a lot more than just goin…
