Former Youth Pastor Arrested on Charges of Voyeurism

Published:

Daniel Kellan Mayfield, 35, a former youth pastor at Gowensville Baptist Church in Landrum, South Carolina, was arrested on June 8, 2023, on charges of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and voyeurism.

The charges stem from allegations that Mayfield filmed a woman showering at her mother's house in May 2023, and that he also filmed young girls in the bathroom of the church where he worked. Mayfield has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Gowensville Baptist Church has said that it is "deeply saddened" by the news, and that it is cooperating with law enforcement. The church has also said that it is providing counseling and support to the victims.

Background

Mayfield was a youth pastor at Gowensville Baptist Church for seven years. He was also a married father of two.

The allegations against Mayfield came to light after a woman reported to police that she had seen a man standing in her backyard while she was showering. The woman said that she recognized the man as Mayfield, and that she had seen him before at the church.

Police searched Mayfield's home and found evidence that he had been filming young girls in the bathroom of the church. The evidence included videos and photos of the girls.

Charges

Mayfield is charged with five counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of voyeurism. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Impact

The allegations against Mayfield have shocked and saddened the community. Gowensville Baptist Church has said that it is "deeply saddened" by the news, and that it is cooperating with law enforcement. The church has also said that it is providing counseling and support to the victims.

I've been acquainted with several people who have ended up being arrested for sexual abuse grooming, etc. The pastor of the church that had the first Bible college I went to had his son as youth pastor. That son was arrested for sexual abuse and grooming. I believe he's in prison at present. The former youth pastor at the church my wife and I are members of was arrested and charged with those things. It truly seems that this kind of thing is prevalent amongst our churches, and that is sad.

We need to find a way to keep these predators from being around our children/wives.

According to God's word, the only sure fire way of accomplishing this would be to castrate ALL men.  Gen 1:28, Matt 19:11-12, 1 Cor. 7:9 and 1 Cor: 7:4-5.  Because like Happy pointed out, how do you vet a married man with a clean background???

I understand that. I also believe that we should place more accountability measures with our pastors and staff members.

Changing workers, those that work with the youth/children should be done regularly. Even if they are doing a good job. This also applies to other positions in the church.

I don't necessarily agree with your assessment. If someone is hired as the youth minister, if he's capable, doing a great job, and there are no problems, he should be left in place.  I've been in many churches where the youth minister and workers have been in place for many years, and there have been no problems. Those that have been in the youth groups love, cherish, trust, and respect these people. And many churches aren't large enough or have enough people to do this. If they did as you are suggesting, the church would be in a constant state of disarray.

You really want to vomit?  I read about this guy that not only watched a young woman bathing, he actually had her husband killed because he slept with her and he wanted to cover up getting her pregnant!  I'll grab a rope if someone wants to get a ball bat.

BTW, 2 Samuel 11:2

"A youth pastor in upstate South Carolina has been charged after allegedly filming multiple women and girls as young as 14 while they showered or used the restroom, including while at church"

I don't consider a 14yo as a young girl but more of a young woman.  I was sus when the article stated he also filmed a "woman" at her mother's house.  If most men are honest, they have seen 14yo that were attractive but didn't know they were under 18.  In other words, teen girls a lot of the time look like adult women.  Now I am not giving him a pass because he was well aware of their age.  It just isn't as sickening as thinking he was "lusting" after 8 year olds.

I don't see where the article called this a "young girl." It states "as young as," and that's totally different. Love your reference to King David... But, is that really applicable here? She was a married woman....jus' sayin'.

Let's put this in perspective, he was married with two children. It's sickening to me anytime someone cheats on their spouse, to willingly do it with someone that's a young woman is another level.

Don't get me wrong, I truly pray that he repents and turns from his ways. He has disqualified himself from the pastoral position.
