Today, I received in the mail, a quilt that I had not seen since 1983.  It was given to me that winter by a person who remains anonymous to this day.  And the wierdest part of it all, is the fact that I never saw this person, nor did the person leave any footprints in the snow that had fallen overnight.

The quilt was mailed to me after I had left it with friends on whose property I was when I received it.  Let me relate the story as best I remember.  But first, I must make this disclaimer... I do not worship angels, nor do I revere the quilt as being a relic to be seen as something to be idolized.

But the origin of the quilt remains a mystery to this day, thirty-two years later.

I had been traveling with a Southern Gospel group from Clifton, VA called the Kingdom Heirs.  (not the famous group, and this group later changed their name to Restoration after finding that the Kingdom Heirs was already taken)

Bob, a young man just a few years younger than myself, owned an old Greyhound bus that he had bought from a junkyard in Fredricksburg, VA. We planned on fixing it up for travel.  His mother and step-father already had a bus of their own.

Bob and I had been working on his bus trying to get it prepared for group travel and usage.  We had ripped all the seats out except the front eight, and were paneling the inside walls of the bus with wood paneling.  We had worked a long day, and Bob went into the house for the night.  He told me he would leave the door unlocked for me so that when I finished my work, I could go in and find a place to rest.

I finished my work and went to the front door of the house only to find it locked.  Bob's mother had gotten up in the middle of the night and locked the door.  She did not know I was still outside.

I returned to the bus and laid on the floor near the Kerosene Heater and fell asleep.  During the night, I awoke freezing!  The kerosene was spent and the fire was gone as well.  I walked to the front door again, hoping the door would be open.  But, it was not.  And so, back to the bus I went.  (at least there, I would be shielded from the winter wind)

I paced the aisle, trying to keep the blood circulating and to keep somewhat warm.  On my third pass down the aisle, I saw a quilt draped over the back of one of the seats that we had not taken off the bus.  I figured Bob's mother or step-father had came out and left it for me.  I wrapped it around me and laid down and was soon fast asleep again.

The next morning, I went to the door and it was unlocked.  Bob's mother was in the kitchen cooking.  I thanked her for the quilt and told her I woke up freezing.  She said she had no idea what I was talking aobut.  Her husband also said he didn't know what I was talking about.  I told them I would go get the quilt and bring it in.

On the way to the bus, I wondered if I had not just dreamed that I had a quilt.  But, the quilt was still there.  I took it to the house and no one in the house had ever seen it before.  Fae, (Bob's mother) asked all around and no one claimed it as theirs or that they had ever seen it.  She even asked friends who had ever come on the property.  No one knew where it came from.

And so, Fae always said it was my Angel Quilt.  That God had sent and angel by my way to keep me from freezing that night.  I can come up with no other explanation.

Here is a song I wrote about that night...

A Blanket of Mercy
by Ronald W Robey

1. The fire had gone out. The bus had grown cold
I walked back and forth so chilled to the bone
But God sent an angel, the chill then did flee
With a blanket of mercy, His love covered me.

cho: A blanket of mercy, a cover so warm
He made me to sleep in spite of the storm
I praised my Lord Jesus and He found delight
My prayer was answered with a blanket that night

2. I saw not the angel, but the proof was right there
For he left a blanket on the back of a chair
God is so loving, He cares for His sheep
He gave me a blanket and caused me to sleep.

cho: A blanket of mercy, a cover so warm
He made me to sleep in spite of the storm
I praised my Lord Jesus and He found delight
My prayer was answered with a blanket that night

I praised my Lord Jesus and He found delight
My prayer was answered with a blanket that night
