This is kinda off topic since none of my kids were attached to either, but our ear,nose, and throat dr. told us that a child's pallate is formed when sleeping, by the tongue. When sleeping, your tongue goes to the roof of your mouth if you breathe through your nose as your supposed too. If your a mouth breather, your tongue stays down and your pallate dosen't form properly and makes for poorly pronounced words and teeth misalignment. I guess if the thumb stays in while sleeping it really could help if they have breathing problems to begin with. If no breathing problems are present, then I suppose it could be a problem.
