LIVINGSTON, New Jersey, June 15, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) -

One of America’s top conservative personalities distanced himself from his Catholic faith’s teachings on homosexuality, saying that he believes homosexuals are “born that way” and therefore it is “very difficult” to call homosexuality sinful.

CNN’s Piers Morgan asked Republican New Jersey governor Chris Christie in an interview that aired Tuesday night: “Is homosexuality a sin?”

“Well my religion says it’s a sin. I mean I think - but for me? I don’t - I’ve always believed that people are born with the predisposition to be homosexual, and so I think if someone is born that way, it’s very difficult to say then that that’s a sin,” said Christie. “But I understand that my Church says that, but for me personally, I don’t look upon someone who’s homosexual as a sinner.”

The Republican governor, who has come into national favor for his no-nonsense approach to fiscal responsibility and strong pro-life views, opposes same-sex “marriage” but is a proponent of homosexual civil unions.

“I think we can have civil unions that can help to give the same type of legal rights to same sex couples that marriage gives them,” he told Morgan.
