popery
Originally popery was a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant material, used to provide a gentle natural scent. Modern popery consists of any decoratively shaped dried plant material (not necessarily from scented plants) with strong synthetic perfumes (and also often strongly colored dyes) added, with the scent often bearing no relation to the plant material used. Sometimes, items which do not originate from plants are mixed in with the popery, to give it bulk and to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

I think I could come up with at least half a dozen similarities between popery and potpourri...here's a poor one...
After some time Popery loses its scent and the dye fades and is no longer pleasing to the senses. However, many keep it laying around knowing it has no value.
