“for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Heb. 13:5 c)

The Lord has promised to “Never” leave us, no, not for a moment even; nor “forsake us”, altogether. We have a two-fold promise in this one sentence, and God cannot go against His promise. We have, first:

The promise that He will not leave us at all. Many teach that the Lord withdraws from us, and leaves us at times because our sin comes between He and us, and if we confess it, and forsake it, He draws near unto us again and fellowship is restored. Though this is partially true, the promise is that He will never, ever leave us, and we must believe His promise rather than man’s teaching. How can we reconcile the two? By realizing what Hebrews 13:5 is about; the next verse explains it well: “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” If the Lord left us when circumstances overwhelmed us, where would we be today? In dire straits, for sure. We have the assurance that He is there, all the time, every moment, and in every situation, for us. He is our helper, and we need not fear man, ever.

Then the promise that the Lord will not abandon us altogether, NEVER! Folks, pay attention now to what I am saying, it is very important that we understand this: The reason that the Father will never leave us and never forsake us is that we do not have sin! It is sin that separates us from God; Jesus paid the price for our sin, and the slate was wiped clean. Again I say, we have no sin--our sins are gone! If this were not true, Good could forsake us, because sin separates us from Him. Jesus, on the cross, with the sin of the entire world on His shoulders, cried out “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” For the first, and only time in His life, God had to turn His back on His beloved Son because of sin. God cannot so much as look upon sin, let alone, allow it into His presence. Just the fact that God has promised never to leave us, shows that we no longer have sin, we are made perfect in Christ. If our sins were not completely done away with, God could not have promised to never leave nor forsake us. This is why we can read in 1 John 3:6 “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.” And in verse 9, we have, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

Rest assured dear Christian friend, that our God loves us, and has provided for us eternal life, so that we shall never perish; never, ever perish, and our God will never leave us even for a moment.
