The Love of Money
1 Timothy 6:10
“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after,
they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many
sorrows.”
What a fantastic verse this is. We cannot see how the love of money can affect, say sins like adultery, but the Bible says it is the “root of all evil.” Every evil act finds its root in the love of money. Again, this is more than amazing to us. As I mused on this verse, I realized that the roots seldom resemble the plant itself; in other words, the sin may not be recognizable by the root, but we need to take God at His Word. For sure, they that covet after riches will be side-tracked from the things of God simply because of their focus on riches instead of righteousness. A wise man once said “When something doesn’t make much sense to you, look for the dollar sign in it” he said it will always be there, and many times I have found this to be true. Sometimes though, it is hidden. We live in a world that is run by money. Every decision that is made in the government is affected, in some way, by money. We may not always see the connection, but, be assured, it is there. In this world, we find a “hook” in almost every scheme or plot, even when the person or persons involved seem to be doing good deeds, and seemingly care about the needs of others; we need to be aware of this and be “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Mt. 10: 16). Be careful about modeling yourself after the “rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” It is easy to become caught up in their folly.
PrOBably the best way to be sure that the love of money does not consume us, is to build a strong relationship with Christ. Putting Him before all things in our life, whether seemingly important or not, will protect us from this worldly folly, and we do need protection since we are so prone to this malady. Why not begin today? Start by setting a goal for yourself, and stick to it! A good goal might be a New Years resolution, so to speak, to read your Bible all the way through this year. Every Christian should either have read their Bible through at least once, or working on doing so. I personally don’t how any one can get along without doing so! It should be as if we went without a meal or two when we fail to “eat” of the Word of God; we ought to suffer from hunger pangs! We read many books all the way through, and yet half of our Bible goes unread, and unheeded. Oh the shame of it all.
