CANEYVILLE, Ky. ? Kentucky's governor warned it will be "a long haul" before life returns to normal after last week's deadly ice storm that cut power to hundreds of thousands and blocked roads with fallen trees and other debris.

Officials in the state's two largest cities, Lexington and Louisville, reported progress. Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry deactivated the city's Emergency Operations Center on Sunday evening after a sharp drop in the number of homes without electricity.

It always takes time in such situations as this. We went thru a bad ice storm back in 2000. Many without electricity, many roads were blocked because of fallen limbs. Even in this winter of 2008-2009 with all the leaves off the trees you can still see many traces of that ice storm of 2000.

We were without electricity about 12 days, but many were without it over a month. It make for a rough time to get thru.

I've got a friend in Northern Arkansas right now, which the northern part of our state was hit hard by this ice storm, as of yesterday they tell home it may be 4 weeks or longer before he has electricity.

One thing, when you go thru such a thing as this, it makes you appreciate our modern conveniences.

Our house is all electric, but we had small wood heather in one end of our house, it kept us warm and gave us a place to cook and make coffee. At nights the temp in our bedroom which is on the other end of our house would dip down into the 30's.
