Members Trish
Another thing to consider are those workbook that have a whole year in one. I've gotton those also and they are like $10. check out a teachers store or bookstore for those. I got mine at Burlington coat factory and just used it for a suplement or for the girls to 'play' with but it really has a whole scope and sequence and daily lesson plans and stuff. It is not christian of course but you could always just add Bible from somewhere else. If you do choose to go with a 'name' cirriculum I recomend staying with one as all the subjects build on each other.
Members Pastorj
Why would we want to short change our children's education with curriculums that might cost less, but are not worth the paper they are printed on. I for one want my children to get the best education possible. That means an organized curriculum and teaching method.
Members ServingHim
Right you are. We definitely don't want to buy cheap if the curriculum is inferior. However, opinions differ on the quality from one publisher to another or one method to another. Just because it's less expensive, however, does not mean your child won't get a good education. I have two successful college graduates who were homeschooled and they received scholarships. We used a varied curriculum and they have not suffered for it. My 3rd child just scored very highly on the psat. And I don't consider any of my children particularly gifted. They have just made good use of what we could afford and pursued their interests as opportunities came.
Members Pastorj
I don't have a problem with multiple curriculums as I mentioned in my first post. However, most homeschool parents just do whatever and their children suffer for it. As educators, we believe in a very structured environment. Though I have my preference on curriculum, and it is a strong preference, I am shocked at the number of home school parents just do whatever and their children can't make it at college. Members Anon
Good points PastorJ. I've heard many people really happy with the ABeka video (except the cost) and the BJ satellite as well. I think those two curriculums are probably the top of the line, as well as possibly Saxon math. As Trish says too, for the younger ones you can get good curriculum books at like Sam's Club with a whole big book full of work papers, etc.
Members Pastorj
Younger ones? What age are you thinking here? Pre-school? Definitely. School age? Absolutely not.
Guest Guest
Heh thing is Bob Jones sounds like it has good curriculum but I do not want to support Bob Jones financially in any way so I am leaning towards using mostly Abeka. I will just skip the bits I don't like, such as the literature sections on Shakespeare (which I think is kinda like "classical pornography" rather than classical literature. I'll probably mix a little bit though. Katy-Anne

Members kevinmiller
You can get BJU stuff on Ebay and other online places if you don't want to buy them direct. And if you get the older stuff then you can be sure that they will be using KJV verses. But I think Shakespeare is a good thing to learn as long as you monitor what they are being taught and if it's from a Christian perspective you can filter out all the junk. My sister actually enjoys Shakespeare. lol

Members kevinmiller
I like BJU stuff, Math-u-see and the Wisdom Booklets. Plus I'm a big fan of literature so I'm sure our library will be well supplied with good books. I have over 60 books in my personal library alone. :D
