What Church Hymnal Does your church use?

If your church uses a hymnal, what one do you use? Who publishes it and what year was it published?

Our church uses the American Broadman Hymnal published in 1957. I also enjoy music from the Baptist Hymnal.

We use Living Hymns which is a BJU publication, I believe.

I prefer "Soul Stirring Songs and Hymns" though...while Living Hymns is larger, the Soul Stirring one includes more of the old favorites IMO. Plus, the BJ one has changed a few of the older words and I miss that....such as in "Come Thou Fount" they changed "Ebenezer" to "Sign of Victory" and that is awkward. They also changed some of the harmonies.

"Soul Stirring Songs and Hymns" has most songs I'm familiar with. There are some missing from when I grew up in the South. But when you have four cases of brand-new hymnbooks donated, you use them whole-heartedly!

I agree...I think it has the best selection and layout of any I have seen. Now if they could just do something about the orchestra books...... :pray

We use the green hymnal "Soul Stirring Hymns" from Sword of the Lord. I think John R. Rice put that together. It is the 1972 edition.

That's the 1st edition, the uncorrupted edition before many of the words were changed.

Soul-Stirring Songs and Hymns. Our former churches have mostly used Great Hymns of the Faith. I miss A Mighty Fortress is Our God in our present hymnal.

I would like to see one, Baptist Hymnal, I have heard of them only.


Church we attend uses Great Hymns of the Faith

We use Majesty Hymns for our Navajo Church. It was published by Majesty Music in 1997.

On the plus side, it has a large number of songs (641) and the typeset is very easy to read. It also includes several songs written by Ron and Shelly Hamilton which our people have enjoyed learning.

On the downside, upon occasion they delete verses, not for some "sinister" reason, but for space considerations. Some familiar verses are left out of some hymns that I would rather have seen them leave alone.

We also use Jesus Woodlaji Sin, which is a Navajo language songbook. I would reckon that most of you would rather skip that one !
