Members Chelle
I was wondering, does anyone on OLB have (or know anyone who has) HughesNet, the satellite-based broadband internet service? I'm curious because I'm looking for an alternative to dial-up for my in-laws, who live in the country.
Members kevinmiller
Satellite is a fine alternative if you have plenty of money to shell out for it. Set up fees are something like $500.
Members Sojourner
This website has a list of several providers, including Direcway, and many reviews by folks who have it..... (scroll down page quite a ways to get to the list)http://www.rateitall.com/t-790-satellite-internet-access-providers.aspx?age=&zipcode=&gender=&sort=0&pagesize=all Direcway only gets 1.5 stars out of 5 by the reviewers. Members Kubel
Satellite is generally expensive, has not-so-good reliability, and has very poor latency (worse than dialup, since generally your dialup connection doesn't have to leave the atmosphere and travel 22,000 miles ). They also heavily restrict you on your useage. A better alternative is DSL if you can get it in your area- or look into a canopy wireless solution. Members Tim
In many areas DSL or a canopy wireless solution are not viable options. There are still many areas of our county that cannot get DSL. Cable is the most often chosen alternative around here because most areas here have cable access. I looked at HughesNet before DSL became available to our home. As others have said the start up cost can be very high but I saw a deal recently that covered most of those cost with a bundled contract committment. (Basic Sat TV and Internet). I know a few people have had very good performace from Directway, no one I know with a Sat Provider has had anything bad to say.
