Life and Death

Before I lived I did not wish for life;

yet now that I live I do not wish for death.

Yet both come unbidden and sudden.

As I wait for sleep,

I toss and turn with the realization:

I am alive and will cease to be.

Death will come upon me just as it has to all life before me.

What does death have in store for me?

Before I lived I had no thought of such things.

There was no fear for there was no me... that I can recall.

Will it be as it was before?

Before life.

Before me.

Before my existence in this life?

Will death restore me to the state I was in before life?

Or is death just a stepping stone to another new life?

Is death only the removal of my living being from its cocoon of a shell;

so that it may continue on its journey of life in a new form?

Will it be to a new body

(to begin a new life,

with fresh memories to create,

with no memory of previous life),

to begin the cycle of worry and pondering over anew?

I have no memories from before this life,

so why would I have them after?

All that I know now I know from this life

and from the ideas of those who lived before me,

in this existence.

No one has come from beyond life,

nor from beyond death,

to tell us they come from a place of life.

No one.

That is,

unless I believe what some say of Jesus,

whom,

some say was the God creator;

life incarnate.

But even this is told to me by people of this existence;

past down to them from ages past.

I would certainly like to know if this is true.

Sleep is coming.

I can feel it now.

The focus of my pondering is wandering.

Fear of death and worries of life slowly leave me;

a calm assurance covers me.

I know that when I sleep I will dream and then I will awake.

I learn that Jesus spoke of life - eternal life
A life beginning when we trust his word
For he who lived a perfect life yet suffered death
And rose again to prove his Word is true.

This living life in Christ is not religious hear-say
But lived by those who trust his living Word
Who come as sinners to the living Jesus
And trust in him, their Saviour & their Lord.

I love this poem, very thought provoking and intriguing and also depressing in a way; that is in that it leaves the reader without any hope of escape, accept the reality of what is...The only conclusion is to accept the finale outcome of life which is death.

People who believe they have the right to exist outside of the fire of Hell don't have much problem with death.  Death is ok as long as Hell has no fire.  I don't like this poem that seems to have no Hell.  I have tried to convince a lot of atheists who comfort themselves in death saying things like this poem says, tried to convince them that God has the right to leave them suffering in the Lake of Fire forever with only the smoke of their torments rising from it as they wish they themselves could rise from it or get out somehow.

I'm not much into poetry so I'll just go to your point on the reality of hell and the need for people to understand the hell of Scripture is real (as is the Lake of Fire) and these are not places of eternal sleep, a quick end, a place where the dead can indulge their sin natures for eternity or any of the other unbiblical views of hell out there.

When it comes to spreading the Word we need to remember how much Jesus had to say about hell and recognize the importance of people being told the reality of hell.

Why worry much about death and the state of ones soul if a person believes heaven is about sitting on clouds playing harps and hell is a place to party and have fun? The reality of hell needs to be preached.

The protagonist of this poem I think could be an agnostic (though it could be anybody) trying to be honest with himself. He heard many things about the transition of life and death and is musing them over in his head. The conclusion he came to I purposefully left cryptic with small allusions to scripture in the last line. The conclusions the reader comes to about this poem tends to be different, dependent on the reader's biblical familiarity with and doctrinal perspective on the subject. The poem is not meant to be all inclusive on the subject nor is it meant to assume to know things which the protagonist does not know nor does it presume to give the reader any conclusions. However, poems tend to take a life and meaning beyond their author, So, dear reader, while the words are mine, the poem's actual musings, pondering and conclusions are for you to feel, ponder, and decide.  I wrote this poem mainly because I know several people who felt as the protagonist did. Hope my author's insight helps!

I do enjoy the poetical addition which Covenanter added. If anyone wants to add more lines biased on the subject or what you would tell the protagonist feel free do do so! Also if you have any insight into what you think the protagonist may have concluded then I love to know what you think!

Life and Death

Before I lived I did not wish for life;

yet now that I live I do not wish for death.

Is death only the removal of my living being from its cocoon of a shell;

so that it may continue on its journey of life in a new form?

Will it be to a new body

(to begin a new life,

with fresh memories to create,

with no memory of previous life),

to begin the cycle of worry and pondering over anew?

I have no memories from before this life,

so why would I have them after?

I can feel it now.

The focus of my pondering is wandering.

Fear of death and worries of life slowly leave me;

a calm assurance covers me.

I know that when I sleep I will dream and then I will awake.

If I wake up burning in Hell, then I'll know Hell is real.

I wish I could be sure of waking in heaven.

I'm so lost I forgot how to rhyme.
