Ron Paul announces retirement from Congress

By Rachel Rose Hartman | The Ticket – 5 hrs ago.. .

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul made a surprise announcement Tuesday that he will not seek re-election to Congress, spelling an end to a nearly 24-year House career amid his third run for president.

"I felt it was better that I concentrate on one election," Paul, 75, told The Facts. "It's about that time when I should change tactics."

Paul, who remains significantly behind in many current national polls, first ran for president as a Libertarian in 1988, and as a Republican in 2008.

Even though both bids came up empty, Paul significantly demonstrated the power of his base in 2008, shocking national observers with his ability to quickly raise large sums of cash from loyal followers who favored his small government ideology. That same base is rallying around his 2012 efforts.

Paul told The Facts he believes he has a better shot at the presidency now than he did in 2008.

His decision leaves his Northern Gulf Coast 14th District seat up for grabs. Paul indicated to The Facts that he wanted to reveal his decision sooner rather than later, evidently to permit the field of would-be successors to plan out their 2012 races.

The district is currently regarded as solidly conservative, but Paul faced a complicated re-election campaign in 2012 due to the state's redistricting plan. The newly configured district will now include a significant number of new voters, according to reports out of Texas.

At the time the remap was being approved by the state legislature, Paul spokesman Jesse Benton gave no indication of Paul's potential retirement.

"Dr. Paul does not feel targeted, and his home county of Brazoria remains the cornerstone of the District," Benton last month told the Texas Tribune of the former obstetrician. "If anything, this is a compliment. The GOP knows Dr. Paul will win anywhere he runs, and that his electoral fortitude allows them to strengthen other districts and have no problems holding the 14th."

RON PAUL'S REALISM

Author of "" and "" October 24, 2011 NewsWithViews.com

The national media continues to give Congressman Ron Paul little credence, yet Paul commands the most loyal, intellectually refined, dedicated, and potentially influential following of any candidate. Paul alone has provided voters with a well-informed, unvarnished description of the economic crisis befalling America, and an equally detailed plan, “Restore America,” that includes the cuts in spending that must take place if we are to avoid an economic collapse.

At a time of economic crisis, of unsustainable debt, one would think that serious journalists would hound the candidates with questions concerning precisely how each plans to cut the trillions necessary to avoid the projected $23 trillion in debt coming within a decade. Oddly, that penultimate question is missing from the debates and largely missing from media coverage, although it is very much on the minds of tens of millions of Americans. President Obama and his chief economic advisers, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, National Economic Council Chairman Larry Summers, and Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag, have presented no plan to cut the trillions required to achieve a balanced budget. As Ron Suskind so brilliantly reveals in his book Confidence Men, Obama has singularly failed the nation by failing to lead and by deferring to advisers who are effectively proxies for the very Wall Street interests largely responsible for our endless recession. While Obama’s advisers have given Wall Street close to a trillion dollars on the theory that certain firms are “too big to fail,” the President has repeatedly avoided making essential decisions because he is “too afraid to lead.”

That fear of leadership is alien to every fiber in Ron Paul. Leadership in a crisis requires the courage to take bold steps to save the nation. In his “Restore America” plan, a proposal similar to the one I offered in a prior newswithviews.com article, Congressman Ron Paul cuts federal spending sufficient to balance the budget within three years. That three years he knows to be our last best hope for saving the republic. If we do not dramatically cut spending within the next three years, the United States will accelerate (even faster than its presently rapid pace) toward economic collapse, to debt so monstrous that interest upon it will consume all discretionary spending. Ron Paul understands this well, and he appreciates that we must cut the budget now not by tens of billions but by over a trillion just to survive.

Ron Paul would abolish the Transportation Safety Administration; the Department of Energy; the Department of Housing and Urban Development; the Department of Commerce; the Department of Interior; and the Department of Education. He would reduce the federal workforce by ten percent. He would repeal Obamacare, the Dodd-Frank Act, and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He would make Medicaid a block grant program and would permit young people to opt out of Social Security. He would cause the food stamps, child nutrition, and other income support programs to revert to the states. He would eliminate all foreign aid. He would end many wasteful federal programs.

On the tax side, Congressman Paul would drop the corporate income tax to 15% and would eliminate taxes on personal savings, estate, and investment income. He would extend the Bush era tax cuts.

A man who practices what he preaches, Congressman Paul has announced that if elected President he would reduce his own salary from $400,000 per year to $39,336, an amount equivalent to that of the average American worker. That move raises an essential question that the media has not asked President Obama but should: Mr. President, you have railed against high executive compensation on the theory that those in Wall Street responsible for capitalizing on junk mortgages and loans should be embarrassed to pay themselves high salaries and bonuses because they have contributed to America’s economic woes; how then can you justify receiving a $400,000 per year salary when you have left the nation with trillions more in debt and substantially higher unemployment than existed just three short years ago?

Congressman Paul’s proposed measures would cut over $1 trillion from federal spending and would inspire an economic revival to save the nation. In typical Ron Paul fashion, he makes a courageous move. He is certainly not your typical politician. He is inexorably courageous in an age of political cowardice. Few candidates dare alienate powerful interests that are capable of ensuring that their campaigns receive large contributions. Fewer still are willing to tell the American people just how dire circumstances really are, as well as precisely what needs to be done to restore the nation’s solvency. Ron Paul has a long history of telling it like it is regardless of the fall-out and demanding real solutions to real problems even if those solutions alienate powerful special interests. Misrepresented to be a man out of touch by the mainstream media, Ron Paul is in fact the only candidate who truly appreciates just how close the nation is to financial ruin and just how deep the spending cuts must be to save the nation from economic collapse.

Regardless of whom the Republican Party chooses as its standard bearer, Ron Paul’s persistent demand that politicians face reality is having a sobering effect. It is helping to refocus the debate on the need for realistic solutions to America’s all too real problems. It is educating the electorate and simultaneously placing pressure on the other candidates to explain precisely what they intend to do to overcome the avalanche of debt now burying the nation.

For those who would criticize Ron Paul’s plan, I have a simple request. Before you complain, try stating an alternative that will also balance the budget within three years. It is no longer sufficient to condemn spending cuts because spending cuts are essential, not optional, if the nation is to survive. An argument against Congressman Paul’s plan must, therefore, proceed on proof of an equally effective means to bring about the same savings. Remember, nearly all sound projections give us little hope for significant growth in the gross domestic product into the foreseeable future.

Consequently, reliance on tax receipts to reduce the debt is unrealistic. Raising taxes sufficient to cover the $1.4 trillion in deficit spending each year would destroy the already floundering private sector. Spending hundreds of billions more in stimulus programs is also proven by recent history to be incapable of bringing about economic recovery. Truth be told, there is no realistic alternative to Congressman Paul’s plan if we are to save the nation from economic ruin.

Moreover, at a time of pervasive government corruption, the wresting of sovereign power from the people by those in government, and an abdication of governing control from the constitutional branches of government to the federal bureaucracy, only Ron Paul’s plan produces the salutary benefit of restoring our system of checks and balances and ending delegation of power run riot. Ron Paul gets it. If the media and pundits do not give Ron Paul’s Restore America plan serious consideration now, they will regret that decision later because the truth and wisdom of his plan will only become more apparent over the next several years.

I've been refreshing myself on economics and economic issues this year and really it didn't take that much study to realize that unless America greatly, most would call it drastically, cuts spending and reduces its size, there is no way America can economically get by much longer. America is very near the point to where it will take all she has just to pay the interest payments on the debt. America's credit rating will drop further, fewer will be willing to loan more to America and those who do will charge ever increasing interest rates. At some point the economy will crumble with a high probability of America itself crumbling in the aftermath.

So far, only Ron Paul is offering a realistic budget plan. Even the best of what others are offering at the moment is like putting a band-aid on a nearly severed limb. Worse, some of the plans out there will actually make things worse.

Do Americans have the intestinal fortitude to do what is necessary in order to bring America back from the brink or will they continue to demand to have their cake and eat it too?

You mean do what the Founders said to do in the Declaration of Indpendence?

America is built on money, greed is its driving force, & it will continue in that direction its presently going, no matter who is elected as its president, nor who serves in its congress or serves on its courts. And of course it will also fail because God has already made the judgmentment, its just a matter of when God carries out the punishment He has already pronounced His judgment on this world. America is just as worldly as any other country & included in that judgment.

1Co 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Mt 6:19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Mt 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Mt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

America pays no attention to God, money is its backbone, money is its goal, greed keeps it going forward & of course that breeds all kinds of corruption that is slowly brining this nation to its knees & the reason God has already pronounce judgment on the whole wide world.

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

And the only one who will have any treasures at all will be only those that stored treasures in Heaven, yet, that will only be a few, for the gate is narrow, & very strait, & few there be that go in thereat.

Money is the root of all evil. Looking back we can see how the big money banking interests tried to gain a foothold almost from the beginning of America. There have been several battles over this, President Andrew Jackson fought the big banking interests his entire presidency, but despite a few temporary setbacks the big banking interests have won.

The creation of the Federal Reserve sparked what brought us to the economic situation we have today. President Nixon taking America off the gold standard and adopting a fiat money system made it certain things would get much worse, much sooner.

What America really needs is a Great Awakening but most professing Christians are either trusting in politics to save the country or enjoying TV while they wait for the Rapture they are certain will call them away before things get too bad for them.

No, I mean do they have what it takes to stop expecting handouts for everything, to limit the federal government and move it back to being constitutional.

No, most are not saved and therefore there is no light in them. The Scriptures describe these times as the end times, America will never be like she was even 50 years ago, there are far too few real Christians around anymore. Our only hope is to carry out the Great Commission and win more souls for the Lord. Once their eyes are opened, they will begin to govern themselves according to the Word.

I would never support Ron Paul if for no other reason than his, at best, questionable views towards Israel. We can never afford to withdraw any of our support from Israel at any time.

Also, Ron Paul tends to attract a lot of anti-government, pot-smoking rogues because he is quite similar in a more "upstanding" way. Ron Paul and Barney Frank co-authored a bill to legalize pot. How does that help our country?

Do any of us know these are the end times? During the Black Death folks thought it was the end, the same during WWI, The Great Depression, WWII and at other times in world and/or American history. We could be on the brink of the end or the end could be decades a century or more away.

Indeed, the only hope is in spreading the Gospel and seeing souls saved. This is true no matter how near or far the end is.

Ron Paul's view towards Israel isn't questionable, it's proactive and sane. Ron Paul says America should remove all the strings we have binding Israel. He says America should allow Israel to be and conduct herself as a soveriegn nation with the right to deal with her internal and external matters as she deems best. Had America not hamstrung Israel for the past several decades it's likey she would not be in the mess she is in now.

Ron Paul has rightly pointed out that drug laws are not in the constitutional realm of the federal government. In attempting to make that point he has put forth bills he knew wouldn't pass in order to try and gain an audience.

On the federal level Ron Paul could rule well, if one considers governing according to the Constitution well.

However, on the State level and likely on most local levels, his libertarian viewpoints would be a major problem and something I couldn't support.

Libertarianism can fit well with the constitutional federal model because of it's foundation but because of the great responsibilities at the State and local levels that same political philosophy wouldn't be suitable there.

Allowing states to decide the legalization of street drugs would be a logistics nightmare...can you imagine....police officers waiting at the borders to catch drugs coming in from "legal" states?!

As far as Israel...I agree we've bound them too much but he also says we should stop sending them money. I disagree with that. I agree with Cain, who will stop giving money only to our enemies. Global allies are much needed these days. Paul would withdraw from every last one of them. Fine....we'd be on our own. It wouldn't have worked during the World Wars...and nobody promises we won't have another.

According to the Constitution laws regarding drugs are a State matter. If folks think it should be a federal matter there are ways built into the Constitution to bring about changes. Unless or until changes are made in that area, the matter of whether drugs are legal or illegal and what any penalties there are is, constitutionally, a matter for the States.

Prior to the Cold War America didn't seek to buy friends. There is no reason America has to buy friends today. Bought friends are not true friends. If America were not giving all of Israels neighbors (enemies) money there would really be no need for America to have to give Israel money to offset all America gives to her enemies. Israel doesn't really need our handouts. What they need is something Ron Paul has said he would maintain, and that's our strategic trade partnership as well as our blessings for Israel to have a free hand in dealing with the so-called Palestinians and their neighboring enemies.
