Who Wrote The Bible and Why It Matters
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bart-d-ehrman/the-bible-telling-lies-to_b_840301.html

Many of the books of the New Testament were written by people who lied about their identity, claiming to be a famous apostle -- Peter, Paul or James -- knowing full well they were someone else. In modern parlance, that is a lie, and a book written by someone who lies about his identity is a forgery.
-Bart D. Ehrman

Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Would you go to UNC and expect to learn about salvation?

:icon_rolleyes: :smilie_loco:4 Reminds me of the seemingly millions of programs they have on the History Channel and History Channel International each making a variety of claims as to why the Bible isn't true, means something other than what we've been told, is all myth, or even if it doesn't outright say these things (which most programs do), the program insinuates throughout that what they quote from the Bible probably isn't reliable.

One question I would like to ask them is this: If the Bible isn't true, as all these programs claim, yet each program makes different claims to why the Bible isn't true or what the Bible really is or means, then exactly which of these "alternate views" is the correct one, because they all can't be correct?

The have the "God" was actually an extra-terrestiral theory.

The Jews/Hebrews of the Bible weren't really Jews/Hebrews but actually some other tribe.

The Bible and the "myth" of God was thought up by Moses so he could gain power and lead a slave revolt in Egypt.

Jesus was actually any number of people other than what Christianity claims (they have many theories on this).

The Bible is simply a collection of stories the Jews heard from others and then retold them a little differently.

This list could go on a long while. We could also include all the various programs which tackle separate biblical issues such as their constant attacks upon Creation, attempts to rewrite history so the Bible would have to be wrong, putting forth wacky theories to explain away various miracles in the Bible, etc.

Wow! Is this the same Bart Ehrman that used to be the leading scholar of evangelical theology? He must have fallen off his rocker!

That was one reason for leaving the CofE in 1957. The Bishop of Winchester led a Lenten Bible study of 2 Peter, & explained why it was a different writer from 1 Peter. He wasn't interested in what Peter wrote.

The whole group were offended.

You know I shy away from liberal web sites "Huffington" in particular but, now I'm interested in their "Religion" pages. It seems they put all the "antichrist" information out there. It will be another source to keep an eye on the enemy.

When I went there, the only salvation I was looking for was from my hangovers. Thank God, He kept me safe until I got out of my drunken stupor and could hear the gospel.

But if you think about it, a professor of religious studies doesn't mean the professor is actually saved. It just means he studies religion. And Satan is using "much learning" of these so-called experts to cast doubt on God's word.

When I enlisted in the Navy, I considered becoming a "religious programs specialist," which is essentially an administrative assistant to a chaplain. My pastor recommended against it, saying that my strongly-held beliefs would clash with the tolerance I would have to display with other religious beliefs.

But I couldn't become a chaplain either, because I wasn't trained or in a seminary "approved" by the Navy. Hmmm ...

Mitch, And that is one major difference in today's American military service, and yesterdays, and even many years ago.

Recently I read an article about a Baptist Chaplains during the Civil War, how much demand there was for them from the wounded soldiers from both sides. Yet in that day the Baptist Pastor that was a Chaplin did not have to wear a muzzle, as today's Baptist Chaplains have to. How can such a person have hope of doing works for God when they're not allowed to proclaim the whole truth, especially leaving out the truth about salvation?

And as an enlisted man in the late 60's, I had not the limits, the muzzle, the enlisted men of today does.
