Pentagon cites 'anti-access' missiles in report

China is aggressively building up military forces to strike U.S. forces in the western Pacific and elsewhere as part of what the Pentagon calls an array of high-tech "anti-access" missiles, submarines and warplanes in its latest annual report.

The report to Congress on China's military power, released Monday, also warned that China's military is extending its glOBal military reach beyond a weapons buildup to wage regional war with Taiwan and the United States. The report also questioned U.S.-China military exchanges, noting that Beijing is using the visits and meetings for political influence operations and intelligence gathering.

"China is fielding an array of conventionally armed ballistic missiles, ground- and air-launched land-attack cruise missiles, special operations forces, and cyberwarfare capabilities to hold targets at risk throughout the region," the report said.

Release of the assessment comes amid reports that China has surpassed Japan as the world's second largest economy in terms of gross domestic product, highlighting Beijing's expanding glOBal power.

Japan's nominal GDP, which isn't adjusted for price and seasonal variations, was worth almost $1.29 trillion in the April-to-June quarter compared with almost $1.34 trillion for China, the Associated Press reported. The figures are converted into dollars based on an average exchange rate for the quarter.

The 74-page Pentagon report highlighted numerous military developments by China's 125-million-troop army, including the first mention of a new multiple-warhead, long-range road-mOBile missile, and details on China's plan to field aircraft carriers.

Much of the report builds on past reports on China's arms buildup, which includes a modestly growing nuclear arsenal and large-scale expansion of missile, naval and air forces.

However, the report for the first time highlighted the growth of Chinese anti-access and area-denial weapons, notably Beijing's building and testing of a unique anti-ship ballistic missile that can hit ships at sea with pinpoint accuracy up to 1,000 miles from China's coasts.

The goal of these forces is to have forces that can attack U.S. ships should they be called on to defend Taiwan in a future conflict with China.

This has been the goal in China since shortly after the communist take over. While Americans look at the short term, and anything taking more than a few months or a year or two at most is viewed as "long term", the Chinese are patient. It's taken them about 60 years to reach where they are today and because it's taken so long, in American eyes, most Americans don't see it and don't realize the dangers involved.

When Clinton was president a Chinese report came into American hands detailing some of their military goals, which we see coming to fruition today, but very few took it seriously since it was "long term" goals. Many said China could never do what they are doing today.

That's a vastly forgotten fact!

Of course, no president that followed Clinton has done anything to stem the Chinese threat either. :icon_sad:

I wouldn't say China is seeking to fill in where America pulls out but more like take over.

China's stated goal for their military build-up since the 90s has been to be able to confront America and defeat them. The last I read China had 24 nuclear missles aimed at American cities.

No doubt the American empire is going the way of the British Empire and all other empires. Should the Lord tarry, China is poised to become the dominate power on earth.

I vote that our gov't immediately raise those import taxes beyond belief, cutting off some of their cash flow and saving some American companies and jOBs in the process. We are buying far too much stuff from China, and far too much of it has been holding up quite poorly around our house, as well!!

I might be wrong, I'm not that much into politics, but I figure many of our large companies that has business interest in foreign countries has plenty of lOBbyist buttering up to enough of our congressmen to keep import taxes beyond belief from happening. Actually I think big business is the one that shapes everything in America towards their favor.

Its not a government by the people for the people, its a government that serves those who serve our congressmen, money people.

Big business and the government itself is so intertwined with China and beholden to them that there is no chance of it ending based upon what's actually best for America.

This is exactly why I blame our gov't for the economic mess we're in. It makes me furious when I hear them say that it is Americans fault that we have so much stuff coming from China because they blame us for buying it. I say, it is THEIR fault for allowing so much of it to come in cheap. If they raised those import taxes high enough to compete with American made goods, then we wouldn't have a prOBlem. I believe that most Americans given the choice between two products of roughly the same price, would buy AMERICAN. Right now, however, we don't even have a choice.....nearly everything in the store is made in China. My hubby is down right mad about car parts and tools being made in China because he says their steel is no good and is too soft for the hard work that they are meant for. As far as this "arms build-up", who knows? It should make our gov't nervous, I do not understand why it does not.

You protectionist! (That's what folks scream in an attempt to shut such ideas down)

For about a hundred years America did indeed protect her manufacturing base and this prospered America then just as it's prospering China now. This also kept America independent because everything we needed was made right here. This is why the liberals, socialist and glOBalists (pretty much one and the same) hate American "protectionism".

The American elite tend to hate America but at the same time view America as impervious and their own leadership as so far above others they can't be beat. They can see how China's military build-up could pose prOBlems but they believe if they show China how nice and friendly they are then the Chinese will eventually be their friends.

LOL, well, if Americans won't protect their own country, who will?? If our gov't really thinks that they can win other countries over with $, then they are more stupid then I thought they were. You cannot buy friends. In fact, when you flaunt everything you have in front of others, you end up with a situation like Hezekiah had that is recorded in 2Kings 20:12-17.
