  1. What is everyone’s thoughts on the Thompson Chain Reference Bible? I really did not like it the first time I saw one, but now I’ve come to realize that it is a great tool for getting into God’s word and digging into it. I have found it stimulates my devotional reading and is very helpful for digging into the different topics in a particular text. I like that it causes you to just move around in the Bible day apart from some notes in the back it has basically no theological bias.
  2. I’ve been interested in starting one of those plans where you are sent a study on each part of the Bible every day, until you get through the whole book, in a year. Has anyone done one of these? I want to make sure I use one with Biblically sound studies. Has anyone followed one that they trust?
  3. What soul winning Bible do you use and why?
  4. I was wondering, does anyone know of a Bible translation, that is as accurate as the KJV, but has more modern writing?
  5. I saw this poem in the March 10, 2017, Vol. LXXXIII, No. 5, issue of 'The Sword of the Lord.' The Poem did not list any credits, or an author, and may be found on page 3, under, 'For Preachers.' My Bible Though the cover is worn And the pages are torn And though places bear traces of tears, Yet more precious than gold Is the Book, worn and old, That can shatter and scatter my fears. When I prayerfully look In the precious old Book, As my eyes scan the pages I see Many tokens of love From the Father above Who is nearest and dearest to me. This old Book is my Guide; 'Tis a Friend by my side; It will lighten and brighten my way. And each promise I find Soothes and gladden my mind As I read it and heed it today.
  6. OK so here's the problem, I have an issue talking to people in my church about my believes because of persecution. I was born and raised Southern Baptist and that is what I am today but for 10 years in between now and then I was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. I did several studies throughout my time there and before a joined on verses in the Bible that link to their beliefs. Everyone that I know in the Baptist Church has said that Jesus was pre-ordained to save us from our sins but no one wants to take knowledge that He was there before the world was formed. Also the fact that Genesis states there was more than one dirty speaking in the garden to Adam and Eve. It states Man has now become like us. We shall make man in our image. Who is God talking to if Jesus wasn't born yet? The Bible if you look up the names of Jesus in Hebrew states that Jesus was the one who Moses spoke to on mount sinai. And if God is the same yesterday today and forever and he spoke to several prophets of the Old Testament when they were children why would he not speak to a seven-year-old boy in this day and age who asked for guidance? There are several other key references in the book of Mormon that can be traced back to the Bible. How can an uneducated boy write a powerful 500 page book that moved enough hearts to make people leave their homes around the world and move to Utah by foot at the risk of death and starvation? Jesus even said in the New Testament when the disciples didn't know what to name the primitive church He told them to name it after Him because if it's named after a man then it's a mans church. If it's named after Jesus the son of God it's His church and His doctrine which all Christian's should follow. How exactly is it wrong. Please can someone who is a minister and actually educated in the true ways of the LDS church and not just listened to a few sermons telling how it's wrong but actually went to the horses mouth and prayed tell me what I should do.
  7. I've recently started listening to J Vernon McGees through the Bible radio broadcast. It's a 5 year program where he teaches through the entire Bible. So far it's been very challenging and exciting. though he's not perfect (He teaches the Gap theory)..he is sounds for the most part. I want to encourage you to join me on the Bible bus. If you have a smart phone you can download the Thru the Bible app and listen freely, you can also purchase the series in a variety of formats from their website.
  8. As many of you know, I am going to Uganda in June for about 3 weeks. The Lord has been burdening my heart intensely for missions lately, and I am practically begging God to send me. I am expecting God to make clear to me his calling when I go in June. I am playing around with the idea of going to Baptist Bible Translators Insitute: https://baptisttranslators.com/about-bbti/ it is basically a 9 month missionary boot camp where they teach you linguistics, bible translation principles, and a whole lot of absolutely helpful things for mission work. It costs about 250 a month, plus living expenses, the catch is, they do not allow students to work because of the intensity of the program. This poses an obstacle for me because I am about 8,000 dollars in debt. I will be getting a loan soon and it will come out to about 150 a month.I estimate that I could work off all my debt in about 8 months.but then I would either have to get support or raise money in advance to go to this bible translation school. I also have been presented an opportunity to go and help plant a church in Goshen Indiana, some of the college guys here are going to be helping out and some of them are getting a house and sharing it, they have invited me to come and help and stay with them, they also know a RV manufacturing plant that is hiring people, this could be a good chance for me to both make money to rid myself of debt and to help out with the star up of a new church.I am leaning heavily towards doing this but still praying about it. I also have the option of staying here and working in my home church, or going to a inner city church in Chicago. I have many options, and a some pretty lofty dreams that I would like to see accomplished, but I am surrendered and open to the Lord's leading whatever that may be: I say all that to say this: 1. Pray that God gives me wisdom and confirms his will 2. Pray that God will provide the finances I need for whatever he has for me in the future.
  9. As many of you know, we are commanded to "Study" to show ourselves approved. God places a priority and a premium on personal Bible Study. So my question is how do you study your bible? what methods do you use? I find myself constantly using my iPad to look up Greek and Hebrew words, as well as searching for words and verses. One thing that I like doing us taking a particular book of the Bible and reading it over and over and over again until I really understand the main focus and layout of the book, I often would read through different commentaries on the book in addition to my daily reading in the actual book. I particularly like H.A. Ironside or Oliver B. Green. How about you?
  10. So I need help selecting the perfect bible. I've been looking but haven't found my one yet. I want it to be sturdy, large, normal sized print. Not the really tiny print. Words of god in red. I would really like to have the reference topics in the back but I would be ok if someone knew of a bible topics book separate I'd really appreaciate it, please when you reply send link too.
  11. Many modern bible versions were made by individuals, foundations, bible societies, para church organizations etc. but how many of these or which ones were directly commissioned and overseen by the authority of an actual "church"?
  12. I have recently ran across an issue with our Sunday School classes. I am the Superintendent (that's hebrew for "you do this nOBody else wants to" ) of the Sunday School classes. We have a lady teaching the teens with the oldest ones being 15 which are her 2 sons (twins). The statement was made the other day that we didn't need to have a woman teaching boys over 13 years old. Since then I have inquired about the 13 year old rule. I have asked a few deacons, preachers, and friends. Only a few have a different answer. Most stick to the 13 year old rule. I decided to search out the Bible first and foremost. The issue of the matter is revolved around a woman not assurp authoruty over a man 1 Timothy 2:12. Their argument is that a boy needs to have a male authority/role model for a teacher. They site Jesus teaching in the temple when He was 12. I have also been told that Jewish "tradition" has a boy becoming a man at the age of 13. They also site it isn't good to have a woman in the same room with teenage boys without her husband present. It's a temptation. Political correctness of the situation with what goes on today. I've heard some of it all. I would also like to state that I will be submissive to my pastor should he say we need to seperate them. BUT...... Here is what I have found so far. Exodus 30:14 Exodus 38:26 Leviticus 27:3-5 all throughout Numbers when they were numbered it started at 20 yrs old. Numbers 32:11 It seems to me that a boy doesn't become a man until he is 20 years old. Any input would be helpful. Thanks,
  13. Sunday evening my pastor spoke on Man's Wisdom vs. God's Wisdom 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 v16, compare to John 16:7,13 v18, to learn you must become a fool (in man's eyes) v19, compare to 1 Corinthians 2:14; James 3:15,16 (man's wisdom) Romans 1:18-32 v18, man's wisdom = ungodliness and unrighteousness v19, God has revealed himself to everyone v20, Creation is clearly seen by everyone and proclaims God's eternal power -- no man has an excuse v21-23, they choose to reject the evidence before them; brings God down to their level v24, God gave them up -- to uncleanness v25, through their "wisdom" they turned God's truth into lies and exalt the creation above the Creator v26, God gave them up -- to vile affections v28, God gave them over -- to a reprOBate mind (reprOBate = lost in sin) v29, describes the reprOBate mind v31, implacable = cannot be calmed or appeased v32, takes pleasure in that which displeases and offends God Ecclesiastes 1:18, "For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow." 1 Corinthians 3:20, "And again, the Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain." Proverbs 1:7, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 15:33, "The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility." *************************************************************************************************************** This describes our society to perfection. If you bring up God's Word you are scoffed at and called a fool for believing in "mythology." Eagle eggs are protected while babies are legally murdered in the womb. Christians are persecuted and homosexuals are lauded. Man's appetite for sin is insatiable. The message just seemed so timely.
  14. Our Sunday School lesson was on 2 Corinthians 6:1-13. The verse that really stood out to me was verse 3, "Giving no offence in any thing; that the ministry be not blamed:" It took me back to 2 Corinthians 5:20, "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God." We are ambassadors, or representatives, of Christ on this earth. An ambassador represents his country to another country. That person embodies the ruler of his country for the citizens of another country. He acts on his behalf. Verses 4 and 6 seemed to build on that for me, "But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned." It called to mind 2 Corinthians 4:2,5, "But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, not handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake." As representatives we should strive to be blameless, for we reflect on Christ and his ministry, and everything we do should put forth Christ and not ourselves. John 3:30, "He must increase, but I must decrease." John 13:35, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a, "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all thins, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth;" Challenged me to ask myself, When people see me how is that reflecting on my Lord?

  17. Hello Everyone! I am doing a survey on Biblical principles in present times. As of now, I am trying to get more balanced participation from various religions. These include but are not limited to: grace and the law, baptisms, role of women in the church, and traditional Christian beliefs. If any of you have a free few minutes, I would really appreciate you all participating. The survey is powered by Google Docs and anonymous. Here is the link to the survey: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?pli=1&formkey=dEZWUmdoZEJ0XzFkSnhEV3lVTndLYkE6MQ#gid=0 Thank you to all that decide to participate! Good Day!
