Sword, "cut a straight path" and did you get that from a Greek or Hebrew dictionary, another man, or from your own study comparing God's word to God's word?

The word Divide is found 46 times in the Bible.  I encourage you to use just your Bible and determine what divide means from these 46.  God's word has a built in dictionary and you may find a better meaning than to "cut a straight path".  You could also further your study by looking up the verse on division/divisions and the English word Cleft as well.  Use the system I quickly outlined above and when you determine a better meaning by comparing God's word then post your conclusions.  It will be most encouraging for us all.

IFB are not the sole handlers of the truth.  What pages and pages of stuff.  You assume I would not if you gave such.  I know the Greek word meaning in English says immerse, and dip,  I would never call it a washing as some would.  Flaws I pointed out from scripture God pour out his Spirit which we also call as Jesus Said, "baptize you with the holy Ghost", there is no water in that.

Can you see your division of the body of Christ, I am of Peter I am of Apollos, I am of Paul type of thing going on.  D James Kenndy is a great man of scriptures.  I don't agree with all his teaching but he is good, RC Sproul is another, John Hagee has great stuff on prophecy but his prosperity nonsense is where he errs, the late Chuck Smith had good solid teaching on how to divide between Israel and the Church of God but erred on allowing to much fleshly music and dress.

I could go on Paul said this, 1Cor 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?  For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Substitute I am Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Angligian, Wesleyan any flavor of denomination for Paul, Apollos, Peter or Jesus and you have carnality ruling in the minds and people walking as men and are being carnal.

I went back and reread the Matt 5 we would be imposing on the text that it is the truly needy for Christ says nothing about "a truly needy only" there in the context.  the whole three chapters from 5-7 are kingdom living plan. So the given is that if we are in the kiingdom today if I in righteousness went to you and asked for something you are to give it.

If we are in the kingdom today and I am asking for your house you would have to give it no questions asked.  Leave it to Jesus to judge if I am needy or not for that is what he will do.

So again you would not follow that teaching today it wont work.

Uku, I think that the teachings of Jesus have spiritual application for the church today but surely we would not have to "give unto him that asks" as this was a teaching of Jesus.

Mt 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

    Would you follow that today?

If so, please give me your house as it is commanded that you give him who asketh thee.

we have those words of baptize in the Koine and their context in English give us the meaning.  We are not sure if the classical Greek is correct but it could be.

However, one would walk down into the water and john would pour water on them could easily be interpreted from teh context as well as immerse.  one way to find out is to see how God gave men the Holy Ghost.   Ac 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Ac 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Ac 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I like immerse and stay with it but I will let those who pour, pour.

Songs,  What got some of these people in a fizzle is that I made mention that I have taught people how to study the Bible and as such I can tell if a person is pretexting their study.

I was not lying it is something I have OBserved many many times in teaching people in seminars and churches on how to study the Bible.

We give them a drawing in one of the sessions and ask them to write about what they see.  And you would be surprised how many of their points are preconceived ideas about what they see and interpret into the drawing.  Many many times I have had to show them that what they see is not what they interpret because they have no proof what they wrote was even happening in the picture. To impose on the drawing preconceived ideas are just as bad as doing it to text.

i.e. in one portion of the drawing there is a shepherd looking over his left shoulder back toward his flock but down to the lower part below the sheep there is a woman carrying a water bottle walking the other way.  9 out of 10 women, in any given session, interpreted the man looking back at the young girl in lust and labeled his a dirty old man.  Now there is no way they could prove from the drawing the age of the man, the woman or that he was even looking at the woman.  It is a preconceived idea that is in their minds as they looked at the picture.  Many of these ladies were older and their husbands had left them for a younger woman before they got saved hence the heart interpretation.

I could give other examples but you would really have to see the drawing.

Point again is we cannot interpret post or Biblical text preconceived attitudes or ideas, we must let the text interpret itself by its context.  But even then lack of communication is missing eye contact, atmosphere, body language, intonation of speech and much more.

As said many times there is no Koine Greek Dictionaries those you use are classical Greek word meanings and pronunciations placed on Koine Greek words.  Strongs and Zoiates are to examples of scholarly works that really are not scholarly.

So a good reason for transliteration is that no one knew the translation if there was one because no Koine Greek Dictionary.

here is some interesting facts about our Nation and our God.

    A Presidential Proclamation:

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us: and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us! It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.

These words were penned by Abraham Lincoln, April 30, 1863 proclaiming a National Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer.

    100 years later, 1963-1973:
Our country: Through two World Wars and two conflicts. President Kennedy’s assassination rocked our nation’s heart. The Civil Rights movement railed loud freedom’s bell. Our enemies, seen and unseen, never tired in their battles against America. And our leaders, with whatever the odds against them, were resolved to always pray and ask God for help. Yes publicly, the God whom our nation trusted in, was called upon for wisdom, for protection and for blessings.

There were no arguments in our Nation’s Capital over the definition of sin nor was a vote ever required at a party’s convention, for a statement that they believed in God.

    150 years later, 2013-2014:
Our country’s National Day of Prayer is shun by most political leaders, not wanting to offend the other gods. Although still controversial, most politicians now issue a statement by rhetoric or default that they believe and support all faith within the United States of America and do not hold to themselves by any statement that the God of Scriptures is the One and Only True God of America.

The United States: ‘A nation of pluralistic gods’? We are now told as citizens, that sin is only relevant to one’s belief. Old Books, containing laws dealing with adultery, inappropriate or illegal sexual acts are to be removed. The inks are being readied to pass laws that would limit or completely bar people of faith from infringing beliefs of right or wrong upon another.

Is this to be a law in the United States of America? Illegal for anyone to proselytize any person of a different faith or religion base. No statements that would be offensive to another would be permitted through any media or communication, defined as public. Those found guilty would be levied fines and/or imprisoned.
(Just a side note:  [Proselytize: to induce someone to convert to one’s faith.]
In the past 30 days, I shared with a person that his god was not a god. I shared with another that his faith was a lie. I shared with another that Jesus was the only way to heaven. I shared with another that she should come to Christ because there “is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” I shared with another that unless she would come to Jesus, she would go to hell!
May evidences abound in our lives for our arrest and conviction, that we are Christians!  Someone shared that the law, if passed will get fence sitters off to one side or the other. Revelation 3:15&16 (lukewarm))

Through President Lincoln, many stood and stayed the attacked. Others throughout these past 150 years, have taken their turn at guard. We are still on a great battlefield; Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Warriors are needed and the price costly. God will muster and suit His warriors!

This 2014 National Day of Prayer, may we heed President Lincoln’s warning, his words, more than ever, wall nailed and beat set. May we in humility, fast and pray for our Nation and Territories

Nothing wrong with speech seasoned with grace in songs.  They should be encouraged.

But I would not so easily put CCM in one column and then put the CGM (contemporary gospel musick) in another, both are using the music of today to worship God.  No body said anything about the country rock style used by the Gaither Bros. when they first sang "Because He Live", it was even added to hymnals yet the same that accept that reject rock style from being used today and some of those songs have great meaning and truth to them.

So if we will judge CCM as worldly, demonic and of the devil and then allow CGM with its worldly honky tonk, country blues and its R&B muisck (which can be used of the Devil as well) are not we being corrupt judges?

AVBibleBeliever got a reaction from Covenanter in Taught By Whom?
Now back on target.  I apologize after I re read your post I see I did in fact misunderstand your statement but my suggestion was still a wise one.

I am gathering a full understanding that you are a working pastor.  Bravo! I commend you for that.  Obviously a good dad to your kids and a man who strives to study.

you were saying by my understanding that people here were making claims to be either influenced by or taught by (as the title of the thread suggests) certain individuals and you named them.  In your OP you said,"For many years due to having a full time job and trying to pastor as well as having a young family my preaching study was entirely from the Bible, for the pure reason that I did not have the time to consult commentaries or other pastors." then later you said, "I should probably add to the OP that even with the greater time I have had over the past few years doing only part time work, and my current situation with more study time, I still spend the first part of any study with only the Bible, reading other men's comments only when I have established a baseline understanding."

So which "other men's comments" do you read"?  After you have studied out and "have established a baseline of understanding."

And this statement intrigues me as a student of Scripture, "My study and preaching Bible does not even have cross references in it".  I was wondering why you would not use cross-referencing seeing that the Holy Ghost does so?  1Cor 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Cross referencing is nothing more than "comparing spiritual things with spiritual"

And another thing and if you are truly spirit filled you should not misunderstand this.  and as much as your statement is true, a servant and man of God should not show forth a partiality or division of men in any way.  You said this, "I am not posting much here right now primarily because I think some of the nuttier members are doing their best to present their corruptions and twistings".  Like I said this may be true (you or I could never say who the "nuttier members" are. You qualify it with an "I think", that should always be a check point for you and I when we say "I think" it surely means we don't fully know. If we don't know then we should keep our hearts from making such statements for the sake of the weaker members.  Labeling is a dangerous thing to do with in the Body of Christ.  While you feel quite at home with doing so it does not make it a correct behaviour.  So let me ask you, are those who go to the schools of Ruckman, Darby, Larkin and Scholfield, et al the "nuttier members" because they were taught differently or from other teachers than those you recognize?

Sure we are to mark those who teach and practice heresy, or outright false teaching like that which is seen in the new Noah movie.  Calling those we disagree with "nuttier members" shows we have a predisposition to partiality of which we are not to do.  Remember that part of the body which may seem less honorable may indeed prove to be of greater importance for the function of the whole body. Remember that though many may not all be the baptist we want them to be or of the same mind of thinking as us, we must always consider them because they are of our body.  What we may call "twisting scriptures" may have more value if we would drop the party line sort of speak teachings we got from our teachers and stop treating those who were taught by others as if they are "nuttier" because they don't agree with us. We are one body and even you would admit IFBs are not the sole Body of Christ.  Now consider the following scripture as it always speaks volumes to me, humbles me and helps me to hold less preference of one man/school/church organization over another.  Take special note of the parts underlined and meditate on them.

1 Cor 12:12-26 ¶ For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.   For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.  For the body is not one member, but many.   If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?   And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?   If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?   But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.   And if they were all one member, where were the body?   But now are they many members, yet but one body.   And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.   Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:  And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.   For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:  That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.   And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

How can we say we are one body if we call them names, put labels on them and say we have no need of them or their opinions?

We would in fact be a divider of His body which He himself set them in order in the body as He pleased.

Is it really a matter of "taught by whom"?  could it be we are despiser's of Christ's Body when we reduce ourselves to preferences of one part of the body over another part?  Aren't we then a judge with partiality?

We are to bring people to Christ, and those that are His Body we are in no wise to drive out because they have different understandings of God's word than the standard "scholastic Line" that many tow.  Much of that standard line comes from twistings of God's words like the TULIP of the Calvinist.  Or from a misunderstanding of baptism and causes division because one has water poured over his head or immersed (do a word structure study on the way John he baptist baptized it will reveal a lot to us who hold full immersion).

My point being why do we have to allow ourselves to be divided up by who we learned from?  is not the Holy Ghost the one who teaches us in the long run?

I do believe that we lack love when we think it important enough to divide over "taught by whom" issues.  We as ministers should be less likely to react negatively to what others say and be more loving in all that we say for it will show forth our maturity.

1Th 4:9 ¶ But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

AVBibleBeliever reacted to John81 in Why Reject Truth When It Is Given?
Does a church hold to the biblical means of salvation? Do they hold to the fundamentals of the faith as found in Scripture? Do they preach salvation by grace through faith, plus nothing? Do they preach pursuing holiness, sharing the Gospel, making disciples, prayer and other biblically important matters as found in Scripture?

That's how to find know or find a good church, a true church.

One doesn't have to make a timeline and play connect the dots to try and link a church today through the ages back to the Apostles; that's what the Catholics and Orthodox do to try and prove legitimacy. Yet look at what they do and say in comparison to Scripture and it's clear whether or not they truly a church of Jesus or not. The same is true with all other churches.

Do they preach Christ and Him crucified? Do they call believers to growth in the Lord and living in His service?
