I went last night and the Assistant Pastor was teaching in Proverbs.  They go through a lot of scripture which I really like.  I really enjoyed it. It is a very small group.  After the service they broke up into smaller groups for personal prayer.  This is what I've been looking for.  I think I can feel like I belong there and not just someone taking up a seat.  I had to kiss a few frogs before I found the prince.  LOL.

I even wore a skirt.  Ha ha.  I wanted to start off on the right foot.  I did tell them I don't have a lot of dresses and will prOBably wear nice slacks in winter and they were very much ok with that and were sincere.  You can just tell.

I appreciate everyone on here who gave me advice and prayed for this situation.  This is my online church family.  :-)

    GraceSaved,

Pastor Brown is currently preaching through 1 Corinthians, and now might be a great time for you to start attending there considering the situation with your sister. This is his latest sermon from this past Sunday; it will give you an idea of what his preaching is like...plus...he's preaching on spiritual gifts. This sermon is mainly about the gift of apostleship (the first gift mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:28).

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the pastor prOBably teaches dress standards - prOBably not every Sunday, though   - and that the ladies who teach or do other things on a regular basis in the church do wear dresses/skirts...but that they'll say you are more than welcome even in your slacks.

Is this IFB?  I didn't see anywhere that it says that but I may have missed it.

I needed another set of eyes.  Thanks everyone for replying.

I'm going to visit the Baptist church on Wed.  It appears that they even have classes for the kids which is hard to find on Wed. services.

    One word.....NO!

OK, I need more than one word by way of warning. Number one is that this is not any kind of Baptist Church. They are a "Community Church". All Community Churches follow the teachings and methods of John MacArthur. They are Inter-Denominational and/or Non-Denominational. They have to be to appeal to the community as a whole.

Here is one erroneous quote from their website: "the first man and woman were deceived by Satan." My Bible tells me that Adam was not decieved:  1Ti 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Here is another quote that shows the tenor of their ministry, (I use the word "ministry" loosely here) "You can expect to hear music consistent with today’s culture."  Isn't that just so comforting. You can hear music just like you are used to.

Community churches are wishy washy to say the least. They have to take snippets of doctrine from other denominations so that they can appeal to all. Needless to say, you would never catch me recommending anything other than a sound New Testament Independent Baptist Church. I am dogmatic about this to the point of being almost fanatical.

If there is no IFB church where you are or where you are going, find one and go there. If you cannot move, or are placed by life circumstancees in a place where there is no IFB church....start one. There just is no substitute for a sound IFB church.

Now aren't you glad you asked for an opinion?

My question on this subject is why do we fleshly people think that we have to speak in some unknown language in order for an all knowing God to understand it?

What does it profit anyone to speak in another language except to present the gospel in another land.

Paul said "Woe unto me if I preach not the gospel" 1 Corinthians 9:16

John said we have an advocate with the Father. Someone who pleads to God on our behalf. 1 John 2:1

The only appeal I see in speaking in tounges is to show others that you are "more spiritual" than they are. That is of the flesh and puffeth up a person.  At no time do you have to prove you are saved to anyone. Your fruits will identify you as part of the vine.

Romans 8:26 Our spirit makes intercession for us because sometimes we don't know what to pray for but we know it needs prayer. Have you ever had a heavy heart and not known why? Had someone on your mind and not know why? That sort of thing.

Here is a picture of the order of the hierarchy when in fellowship with God.

    1. God the Father...sitting on the Throne

    2. God the Son....makes intercession with the Father on our behalf

    3. God the Holy Spirit...bares witness for us

    3. Holy Spirit (in saved man)..Our link to the throne of God

    2. Mind of man...living in the Spirit becomes the mind of Christ

    1. Flesh of man....Having the mind of Christ and walking in the Spirit the flesh is then under subjection.

If it stays in that order then you have fellowship with God. Knowing that God does not change we can see when fellowship is broken that one of the last three are out of order. Most times we put the flesh above the Holy Spirit even when we don't realize it. Some scientist and really "smart" people put the mind 1st.

Sorry if I am rambling or got off topic. Hope this helps.

Dave: I did tell her it was a reprimand.

John: I think you and Dave are right. I think I've showed her all I can and it's time to let her decide for herself. There is no contention between us but I better let it go so as not to let it get that far. She seems to have her mind made up about it. With what you guys shared, it does help me to let it go. Thanks guys.

If you look up "edify", "edification" etc you find only one verse that clearly indicates edifying of self, and it is that verse. All others seem to indicate edification of others.
The verse itself is contrasting self edification and edification of the church. One is good, one is not. We are not lift ourselves up. We are not to boast of purse lives. We are to esteem other more highly than ourselves.

Her understanding of edify self is wrong - it is a rebuke, not a commendation.

I'm not sure if there is a disagreement yet. I asked him a question but he couldn't answer at that time and offered to get together with me. I have no intentions of arguing or debating, and I don't think he does either, but just get into scripture and compare our beliefs. I'm doing this before I decide to make a commitment to fellowship with or be a member of that church, especially since I bring my kids with me. I think it's important to know what their core beliefs are so I know exactly what I'm getting into. Whatever happens, I know God has my best interest at heart and he knows my intentions and desires. I believe he will work it out and place me where he wants me. There's gotta be a light at the end of this tunnel at some point.

You do, indeed, face a difficult decision:

Go to a church with some aberrant teachings

    or

      Go nowhere.

Both have challenges to them.  Personally, I would choose the church with the fewest aberrant doctrines, because no matter where you go, chances are there will be something you disagree with-a perfect church wouldn't want you, or me, as part anywaqys because we would surely bring them down a notch or two.

But, the reason I would go the way I would, is because to get out altogether is dangerous-a church with a few dfficulties will challenge one to study things out, to better learn the doctrines in question. And you'll certainly have to stay in prayer, and teach your children the truth of the matter, but to get out al the way can set a precedence in your live that can be very dfficult to overcome.  I got out of church for a while due to issues I had with the pastor, and I found it difficult to get back in again, and then, to remain faithful. It took my new pastor to lovingly, but firmly, call me on lying about why I was missing service to wake me up, humble me and get right. But it was hard. Believers are made to seek fellowship and to be a part of a church-to not be a part is unnatural for the believer, so better to go somewhere where there might be some wrong teachings, (if not too bad), and keep yourself pure, while reaping the benefits of the assembly, than to leave it all, even for a while, and risk falling into a spiritual stupor.

I was shocked one time when visiting family to hear good preaching at a Methodist church.  The pastor had been the pastor there for 54 years, and was still preaching the same as when he started.  I guess the Methodist church wasn't always the horrible mess it is in today.  So, don't give up.  It doesn't have to say "Baptist" on the sign to have a good pastor leading the flock.

It really depends a great deal upon the pastor. That Assemblies of God church I was saved in had a conservative pastor who preached well from the Bible. While they officially believed in speaking in tongues, it wasn't something that was ever practiced in the church nor did the pastor ever preach upon that during the time I attended. The pastor who took his place was almost totally the opposite. He didn't preach good sermons from the Bible, he did talk a lot about speaking in tongues, he did speak in tongues from the stage (he turned the platform into a stage by putting a rock band there) and he encourged everyone to speak in tongues. That's when I left.

There was a time I attended a Church of Christ (I think it was that, it was the church where they don't believe in musical intruments for worship). Officially that church has some teachings I don't believe in, but the pastor during those few months I was there never once touched upon anything particular to that denominations stances. His sermons were biblically sound and he conducted a men's Bible study that was biblically sound; again with nothing from the denominations teachings ever put forth. I was only there for about three months as I was transitioning from another church that had gone bad due to a new pastor coming in and changing everything to a more modernistic and entertainment style.

If you can find a church that's "good enough", one that preaches the Word and will edify you without filling your mind with strange teachings, then attend there until the Lord leads you to a permanent church home.

I know many folks who are in SBC churches, various non-denominational churches and others where they are being fed the Word and able to grow in Christ even though there are points they take issue with in those churches.

From my experience, as well as from what others have said to me, if you can't attend a really good church but there is a good, or sometimes just an okay church you can attend, that's better than no church at all.

Again, it often comes down to the pastor and what he chooses to focus upon for his preaching and teaching.

Be in much prayer and follow the Lord's leading.

I didn't end up going to the Tue. night Bible study at their house (I was sick) and I haven't been back to the church. I sent them a couple emails but they haven't responded so I am taking it in a way that I was given a way out, if that makes sense. However, I did visit a church tonight that a friend recommended and guess what they talked about??? Eternal security!!! :-) And in the children's class they are studying on choosing wise words and having them memorize Proverbs 15:1 which we've been currently teaching our kids at home. Coincidence? I don't think so.
