Sad, very few Christians share your beliefs.  It seems they put more faith in who the president will be and his abilities to fix today's problems then the amount of faith they put in the Creator.
No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of [this] life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier... II Timothy 2:4

I appreciate the review. Sorry to here about your wife's struggles with CCM. We will pray that she gains the victory. I have been told privately by a friend of mine that I should watch my back over some of the things that I said in the book. It seems that I upset a few people because I named specific churches, specific people, and specific incidents. One of those churches is in the town that we live in and it seems that I caused quite a stir in that church. Oh well. That's life.

There is a quote in this book that Bro. Smith put in that came from someone named Sears that was quoted from David Cloud, anyway it says when the music standards lower, the dress standards lower; when the dress standards lower something else lowers and so one.  It reminds me of what you just said here about music only being the beginning.

The words English and Bible aren't found in any of the English Bibles either! Just because a word isn't found in the Bible doesn't mean that we can't use it to describe something that is found in the Bible. Mountain Christian was simply saying that if the Word was referring to this particular event than it would also be referring to it in Acts. And while I disagree with his logic (if it meant departure, that does fit in the verse in Acts) I also disagree with the gross assumption that the only way we can understand God's Word is to study Greek. Do we believe that the KJB is not only inerrant, but also perfect (complete)? If it is complete than we don't need Greek to explain it, we just need to learn English!!!!

God hath chosen the foolishness of PREACHING to save...        not singing!!!

If they will not repent of that way that seems right unto them and come to Christ for life, your efforts in music are in vain.
If the saved will not endure sound doctrine, your entertainment is in vain.

Christians need to get out of the entertainment business and reason with them concerning sin, righteousness and judgement to come!!  (This coming from a singer and musician who has a family chock full of the same).

The lost are not reached for Christ by using the world's philosophy - whether it's in music, speech, dress, feminism, etc. The lost are reached by the gospel which is presented by saved people who are obedient to the Word of God.

Sad to say many churches have turned into entertainment centers. And they have to keep coming up with new & different entertainment in order to keep their members. For them Jesus is just not enough.

When Jesus told His disciples to cast their net on the other side, He did not tell them to get a new boat, change their clothes or hair styles, get a woman to help, or change the music on their IPOD.  All they had to do was obey.  When we follow Christ, He will make us fishers of men, we can't do it ourselves.  If we feel we need to change or adapt, basically we are saying we can go it alone without Christ's help, and that is asking for disaster.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... You're equating a particular music with whether or not a church will grow. Does music save people? Is it responsible for adding people to the church? The Holy Spirit saves people. The Holy Spirit grows the church both in numbers and in the Lord.

The idea that a church must 'keep up with the Joneses' in the music department in order to lure people into church is a very dangerous idea. Once upon a time, churches actually chose their music to honor God, and left the results up to Him. Now, they often choose the music to draw the crowds - but what kind of crowds are they drawing?  Worldly music draws worldly crowds. That is hardly 'growing in numbers for the Lord'.  It is growing in numbers, yes, but in shallowness and worldliness. This is pragmatism. "The end justifies the means." Unfortunately, the end will not be holy and separated lives unto God.  We are to obey God, and let Him worry about the results.

If you don't believe me, just look at the majority of evangelical churches. They teach the gospel, yes, but that's about it. They have used worldly means - music and entertainment and lax standards - to draw to draw the world. And they have succeeded - in bringing the world into the church, and producing weak, carnal Christians.  They appear to love the Lord - even more than us. But they will not obey Him. What does that verse say? "If ye love me, keep my commands." They do not appear as lights "in a wicked and perverse generation". They are losing their young people to the world, and to ritualistic, dead churches, because the young people cannot see the power of God and the holiness of God reflected in their shallow churches.  I know - I used to be there.

You know, I couldn't agree more.  But It;s not just a near disaster; it's a major disaster. This world system has slowly taken men's clothing, professions, even hobbies and given them to women. We have woman soldiers, police officers, woman preachers....then an increasing number are going big game hunting....girls hunting deer with bow and arrow; those kinds of things. That's a MAN THING! No wonder we have so many sodomite sissies prissing around with earrings.....we've raised our little girls to be like boys until they have taken all the man stuff until there is little distinction between gender roles.  I'm THANKFUL that my Wife and Daughter have no desire whatsover to PREACH, join the Army, or go out into the woods and kill something: In the Bible we read about "mighty men of valour"....I haven't come across any "mighty women" in there yet......man stuff
Did this thread go off topic?

I do not stay around those who disobey God, & women preaching & or teaching men is disobeying. Why. Because God tells me not to.

2Th 3:14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

As John said, TGL, a woman is not to preach.  If there is a service where a woman is "preaching," it is 100% anti-scriptural, and Christians need to stand against wrong.  I, too, would leave a service where a woman is "preaching," just as I would leave a service where a man was preaching heresy (and the "I" is actually a "we" because my husband would be leading me outta there...)

And, FWIW, you don't have the power to seek forgiveness of others from the Lord.  That is an individual thing, between each person and Christ.  And if they are sinning, God will convict.

Anyhoooo....this is far from the OP.  Let's get back to the discussion of music in Independent Baptist churches.

Considering Scripture says women are not to preach in church, and Scripture also calls us to avoid all appearance of evil, to pay heed to our conscience that if we can't do something with good conscious towards God we shouldn't do it, and that if we know the right thing to do but don't do it then that's sin for us, and a host of other sound biblical reasons for doing what they did, I don't see that they need to ask forgiveness nor are they in need of our prayers for their forgiveness.

My wife and parents already let me know that I can't complain because I wrote in Virgil Goode's name for president and did not support Romney. I am fine with that. Romney did not represent me with my Christian conservative beliefs and I am not upset that I didn't support him. Obama won and I still have faith God is in control. Looking at the positive, this is a good "come to Jesus" moment for the Republican party that unless they have a strong conservative running, they will lose. Although the 2008 election should have done the same thing. McCain, like Romney, is not a conservative candidate.

This is good for soul-winning. With all the "evil" that Obama represents, maybe some limp-wristed/liberal/so-called Christians will be scared because of the election results and realize it is time to get back to God to turn this country around. Praise the Lord, God is in control.

My vote for Goode didn't count in the grand scheme of things because West Virginia over whelmingly went for Romney. My wife and parents might come around and realize my vote did not support Obama, but I don't want them to do this. I am quite happy to have not supported Romney and want them to know that I will not cave in on my beliefs to support the "lesser of two evils." I will stand firm, period!

One more issue I would bring up, though there are many great examples, especially concerning associations, and that is, often extreme styles in hair, clothes, jewelry and such, tend toward a 'look at me!' atitude, which would be considered immodest and prideful. We don't have to be plain like the Amish, (though I kind of like the style myself), but our styles should not be such as scream "Pay attention to ME!". All our attention should be directed toward God, not ourselves, and at 5 years old, its a great time to begin to teach him such important things.

I really like the fact that not being able to give a Biblical reason made you stop and think about it.
By the way, another reason for kids to NOT do something is because it does not please their parents and loved ones.

Interesting opportunity to be blatantly honest and Biblical. Making the right decision on this issue sheds loads of light on other correct and Biblical decisions you make. But, since this is not a major deal breaker with God, one way or another, maybe you can simply tell "Johnny", that you aren't sure what The Bible says about it because Mohawks weren't mentioned just like a lot of stuff isn't mentioned like saggy jeans, hats worn backwards, pink hair, ear rings being worn in the nose, and what night is the best night for the midweek church service; Wednesday or Thursday.

You might want to explore the issues with your son.
    - What is a Mohawk and who started it?
    - Who else is sporting a Mohawk today? By what other identifiers are they known; clothes, habits, type of friends?
    - Why do you want to look this way? "I don't know" is not an answer. It might be that "Johnny" doesn't get to have a Mohawk if he can't sell you on the idea.
    - Who else did you see have a Mohawk lately?
    - What does a good Mohawk hair cut look like?
    - What does a bad Mohawk haircut look like?
    - If you knew that something that you wanted to do wear identified you in a bad way with people you love, would it still be important enough to you to do it anyway?
    - Have you ever thought of starting a new trend and cutting your hair in a diagonal Mohawk and calling it a Myhawk?
    - Let's try it for a week and see if we like you like that.
    - What if it stays that way, would you be ok with that for 20 years?
    - Lets Google images of people with Mohawk haircuts and see what else shows up around it and see if it glorifies The Lord.
    - Do you want a real Mohawk where the rest of the hair is shaved off, or just a fake Mohawk?

An argument stopper that only works on kids who are close to their parents and don't want to hurt them; "Ya know Johnny, this is one of those things that I can't find anything in writing about but that I feel might not be a good idea, and here's why. (Tell him why, and it needs to be real and convincing. If it does not sound convincing to you, it won't to him either.) Now, if you still trust me, let's do this; we'll try a Mohawk on you for the weekend. But after Sunday night church, we'll even your hair out and talk about it, and go from there."
As a parent of kids who are now grown with kids of their own, these are the thoughts that went through my head.

    Hope it helps.

My 5 year old son wanted a mohawk. My wife and I are not lovers of the hairstyle. We have 2 girls and 2 boys. While they are living at home, we are rearing the girls to have long hair and the boys short hair. The mohawk is definately short. We wanted to say no, but didn't. Why didn't we? Our children are very good at hearing the word "no" and obeying with very little whining. The problem is, we say "no" alot. Just going to Wal-mart, our children see alot of the "world" and we have to frequently say "no" and usually give an explaination. So when it came to the mohawk, we didn't just blurt out a "no" because I wanted a Biblical explanation as to why I was saying no. The only thing I could come up with was separation from the world. Just one problem, my world and my children's world doesn't have any mohawks. Two years ago, my neice's hubby got a mohawk and kept it for a couple months. He lives 4 hours away and is supposedly a Christian so I didn't feel this fell under worldly separation. That is the only place I can think of that my son has even seen a mohawk. He is not trying to fit into a group. He is homeschooled and there aren't any mohawks at church.

So my 5 yo has a mohawk. Problem. My parents saw this and immediately told him they didn't like his hair; they were quite blunt. The other night, my dad said it was sad my son had a mohawk since he didn't have any choice in the matter. My dad thinks I wanted my son to have this mohawk and that it is sad I am forcing such a "worldly" haircut on him??? This is the same man that pokes fun at me because we live so conservatively, in his eyes we might as well be Amish. So now both my parents think I am pushing worldliness on my son. Now I am wondering if I should cut my sons hair because it might be a stumbling block for my parents. Isn't "falsely accusing" me of pushing worldliness on my son, when I am not, a sin? Do I need to cut my son's hair because I am causing my parents to sin? If I tell him he is going to have to get rid of the mohawk, I want my Bible in hand to explain it to him. Do I need to do this and how do I do this? Any thoughts??
