    Hello beameup

I also dislike the false doctrine of "replacement theology"; But I think it mainly applies to transferring promises God made to Israel, to the Church.

As for the idea that "backsliding" is not to be applied to New Testament Saints; I must disagree.  If what we see happening in Corinth wasn’t backsliding, I don’t know what it was.

Also, we see the end results of being a backsliding Christian, in 1 John 2:28....
"And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming."

    ------------------------
As always, I have not arrived yet; So I could be wrong.
So let me know, if you find a flaw in my logic.

Thanks for your comments, but due to the "culture" of that area, I don't doubt that they simply were not aware that they were "sinning" (as hard as that is for us to believe).  It seems to me that they were simply "feeding the flesh" (and lusts thereof).  To me, there is an obvious omission by the Holy Spirit of the word "backslide/backslider" in the entire New Testament.  Now, there is a "command" doctrine of "walking in the Holy Spirit" which, in 45 years in IFB, I have never heard a single "peep" coming from the pulpit on this "doctrine".

It's not at all unusual for O.T. (Hebrew) "doctrines" to creep slowly into the Body of Christ.  I've even seen the "curses" on Israel applied to the Body of Christ.

    If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways;
then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  2 Chronicles 7:14
Sure doesn't sound like the "Gospel of Grace" to me, but how many times have I heard this applied to the Body of Christ?
  2. A concordance search will reveal that the "doctrine" of "backsliding" is nowhere found in the New Testament.  This is yet another example of "replacement theology", where a doctrine that applies to Israel is misapplied to the Body of Christ.

Hosea 11:7  And my people  [Israel] are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

Hosea 4:16  For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

Jeremiah 8:5   Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

Jeremiah 3:14  Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

Jeremiah 3:12  Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.

    etc.

A "doctrine" for the Body of Christ that is found in Paul's Epistles is the "doctrine" of   Walking in the Spiritsee Romans 8 & Galatians 5

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.  Galatians 5:16
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  Romans 8:5
A Christian is either "walking in the Spirit" or they are "walking in the flesh".
There is no reason to take an O.T. Israeli phrase and force it to apply it to the Body of Christ.
  3. Matthew 13:18-23 Kingdom Parable:    Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Matthew 13:34-35  All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

  4. [on the road to Emmaus, Jesus speaking]  Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.  Luke 24:25-27

  5. This section of Hebrews deals with a comparison between Mount Sinai (12:18-21) and Heavenly Jerusalem (12:22-24).

Written to "To the general assembly and church of the firstborn", which I would consider to be strictly a Hebrew group (including the Patriarchs).  I would consider vs. 22-24 to be a yet future event (and destination) -- a "reunion" of sorts -- as the "general assembly" is  panēgyris   which is a festal assembly and celebration.

vs. 18: For ye are not come unto the mount [Sinai] that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

vs. 22: But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

Nobody understood this "ye are not come" to mean that everyone addressed in this section of Hebrews actually traveled to Sinai or heavenly Jerusalem.  This passage is expressed in a tense that places "ye are come" (to Heavenly Jerusalem) as if it had already occurred, and as far as God is concerned, it is as-good-as-done.  It is expressed as a "comparison and contrast" between the old system of Moses given at Sinai and the new system of access to God given by Messiah. There will be a "celebratory reunion" of all those Patriarchs of the O.T. with the Messianic Israelis of the New Testament in the FUTURE.  It's really just a simple literary device (comparison and contrast).

Hebrews is directed at encouraging those Messianic Israelis of the New Testament to press ahead to bring about God's Kingdom on Earth (Millennial Reign of Messiah in Israel).  Obviously the writer of Hebrews had a lot of "authority" with the readers of this Epistle, as he addresses them as such. No doubt, the writer was present at the events of the 2nd Chapter of Acts (Pentecost) and witnessed the POWER of the Holy Spirit.

The Apostle Paul knew that every parable, as well as the Law under the Old Testament Jew, was. "... for instruction in righteousness

Perhaps you could elucidate on Matthew 25:1-15 "The Parable of the Ten Virgins" as it applies to the Body of Christ?

I wasn't aware that Paul knew all the parables and used all the parables in his teaching (Romans - Philemon).

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Timothy 3:16 & 17

All of the parables have some meaning to instruct every saint, in any dispensation, to bring about reproof, or, "instruction in righteousness." This includes all of the parables of the Lord Jesus.

A lot of Christian "cults" (heresies) have been formed by taking the parables literally and applying them to the Body of Christ.  IFB "Baptist briders" come to mind.  Was Jesus speaking to the Body of Christ when he spoke in parables?

    1. Doctrine, 2. Reproof, 3. Correction, are all separate "categories".  As to the "Instruction in righteousness", well that could be understood to be the entire Bible.  Break the verse down into its elements.

  8. And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.  Genesis 17:19
Abraham "believed God" that Isaac would "have seed" (ie: children, descendants).  So, Abraham also believed in the resurrection, had Isaac died.  In obedience he "offered up" his ONLY son (btw: technically he had "another son" - Ishmael).

Bits and pieces, but no mention of "Jesus" or that he would die for the sins of the whole world, be buried and be raised again the third day.  If you can find this in Genesis 3:15, then by-all-means elaborate on it.

This parable is for the body of Christ as both brother Jim, Heartstrings, and sister Ronda plainly brought out. Whether number 2 in the parable was saved or not and is subject to opinion (and I heartliy agree with Heartstrings).

What "criteria" do you use to determine which "parables" apply directly to the Body of Christ, or do you apply all parables directly to the Body of Christ?

  10. What if Abraham had not actually committed to slitting his son's throat when Isaac was on the woodpile?  What if Abraham had just acknowledged that that is what God wanted him to do, and thus "understood" the "sacrifice of an ONLY son" but not acted on it?  Would Abraham have been "justified" by simply "believing"?

  11. Harvesting will occur during the Tribulation. The "end of the world" could be expressed as the "end of this age" or "end of this current world", as the Millennium will be a "new world". Separation of the "sheep from the goats" will determine who enters the Millennial Kingdom, and who is cast out.  I see no application in this "parable" for the Body of Christ.

  12. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Hebrews 11:8-10

    As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things;

Why did Paul write "as a Jew"? He was a Jew so what did he do that Jews do? He lived as under the law. Why did he say "as under"? Jesus set the captives free. Paul lived under the Law of Liberty. No longer under bondage to the Law of Moses. Paul was free, Peter was free, all Jews are free when they take on Jesus' yoke. Jesus sets everyone free who come to Him to have their sins forgiven. Its great to be saved by Jesus.

And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 1 Cor 9:20

To a strictly "Jewish" audience, Paul would of course pursuaded them that the "Kingdom" (on earth) was still available to them as a Nation, and opened up the Old Testament to them.

I personally think the devil has had a candidate prepped/waiting in every generation since Christ came. The devil doesn't know when Jesus will rapture us and so I would think (my own opinion here) that he has had to have had someone ready for the position in each generation since Christ came.

Good point.  I believe that also.  Isn't it amazing that God could wait so many centuries to complete the Body of Christ?   Now we see Israel once again and the growth of Messianic congregations there in Israel.

  15. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.  Revelation 11:3

Malachi 4:4-5 Mentions Moses and Elijah:
Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
  16. I've heard the view that there must have been "someone" who could fulfill the antichrist role during the opening chapters of the book of Acts.  One potential candidate would be Simon the Sorcerer as found in Acts 8 (note this Is the transition between the "stoning of Stephen" and the salvation of Paul.

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Acts 8:9-20
So Simon never actually received the Holy Spirit, even though at one point he "believed" and was baptized.

    The King of the Kingdom

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. Isaiah 11:2-6
  18. In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence. And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.  Isaiah 4:2-6
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:  Isaiah 11:1

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.  Isaiah 11:6-9

  19. Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. [the world and/or Israel]  John 18:36
Note that Jesus never presents himself directly as a revolutionary to "overthrow" the Romans, as that would bring the wrath of the ruling Romans upon him.  Then, in this verse, he finally indicates that His Kingdom could have been "from hence".
  20. Back to the OP:
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations [Gentiles] which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles  Zech 14:16
  21. Back to the OP:

I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations.  Psalm 22:28

  22. Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of GodLuke 3:38

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.  Genesis 6:2

    Hebrew: bənê hāʼĕlōhîm, בני האלהים

  23. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:

If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
